i recently bought a 1980 starcraft kingfisher 16ft4in aluminum v bottom boat with a Suzuki dt55 motor.
picked it up for one heal of a deal.... so i though:facepalm: turns out it didnt need new carpet. It actually needs all new floor. and a new transom. so here goes my restoration. im not in a hurry to complete this my timelines 1-3 months. realistic goal is October.
so a little info about the boat:
Hin: STRF26531079-FO
MOTOR: Suzuki DT55 s/n: 05501-502512
Minkato trolling motor 795mx s/n: 1135863

so know that's out of the way.
my plans are to redo the floor, build a front deck with a live well in it and 1 chair, build a rear deck with a sizable storage for 2 gas tanks and 2 batteries and a isolator, in the middle i plan on fiberglass sheeting the center and seal the edges leaving a white textured floor like on those center counsel fishing boats. i want to have 2 chairs on there own mounts. as for the side steering counsel i want to raise it about 4-6 inches taller. I am 6;4 tall so the counsel will be a little short. also plan on making a windshield and adding a marine radio with a couple waterproof speakers.

i will also be sealing the hull bottom under the floor and running PVC piping under it to the rails for electrical wires and a set for the live well. as for the live well i will be running a manual open/closed valve that i can use to constantly fill the live well with the over flow hose keeping the water about 11in deep then when im leaving the lake i can close the valve and ill have an electrical aerator that i can keep on to keep bait alive.

if anyone has ideas on what to use for certain things like the live well and what not please let me know.

as for the name if anyone was curious of the meaning behind "Spike" i lost my younger brother to cancer a few years back. we did everything together from fighting, to hunting, mud racing, fishing, ect. he was only 16 when we lost him. his nick name we all called him was spike. every time i get the chance to get up early and go fishing until the sun goes down i always feel like im out with him again. so as a tribute to my brother and the great times we had together im naming the boat spike. from everything i have read about boat names and what not i should be ok since the boat has never been named. does anyone have any advise before i lay my paint and make the boats name permanent.

And so the adventure starts............................

Yeah Buddy! I'd say she was about due for some sprucing up.

Some of that decking looks kinda green, is that pressure treated plywood? If it is I suggest to get rid of it and replace it with exterior grade ply.

When doing your deck/floor and transom wood seal it with epoxy resin, 3 or 4 coats will make it look like this:

This will keep any water off of and out of your new plywood, it's like a sheet of glass between your wood and the water.

When building/framing your decks, use aluminum angle or square tube. It's much lighter and longer lasting than wood, it also looks much more professional.

very nice sir. yes i planed on using square aluminum to make a square frame and go from there. plus the aluminum would be better for the front since i am adding a deck up front. no the guy used mdo wood. but it wasnt sealed with anything. yet theres a brand new can in the boat of this stuff http://menards.com/main/paint/exterior-stain/wood-preservatives/pittsburgh-paints-ultra-advanced-waterproofing-sealant/p-1489250-c-7950.htm. know after contacting the customer service people i found out that this stuff when dry is very hard and very durable. apperently is as strong and shiny as glass. so since its already sitting in the boat for me i beleive i will try it. plus as stated im going to add fiber glass sheet in the center section between the 2 decks and seal it against the edges then have a drain at the back against the rear deck for drainage to the bilge pump.

did notice this steering cable coating is kinda tore up. the motor still turns nice and easy so i dont think im going to replace the line but i do think ill plasidip the cable to add a new shell to is. or i might just take some rubber hose and put it inside the rubber hose to keep the weather off it.

uhh got a question. that gluvit stuff. can you apply that to the outside of the boat. i want to put that down over the outside of the boat.
ive already decided to use rubberized coating on the inside of the hull under the wood floor. not on the wood but all over the bottom of the floor. then just for the heck of double protection i was wondering if that gluvit stuff can be applied outside under water line. i would think with its glass like finish it would be like a fresh coat of wax. nice and smooth in the water and it would be sealed inside and out ;)

If Gluvit is applied to the exterior it has to be painted over to protect it from UV breakdown.

Hey TT nice project you have going there. I personally would not put Gluvit on the out side of the hull, it takes a very long time set up, so it can wick into all the little crevaces. It tends to run lots and is very tough to spread out evenly, plus it is almost impossible to sand as it stays flexable. Just my 2 cents

o wasnt aware of that. after spraying out the inside of the boat last night i notices the caulking on the seams on the outside of the boat seem really cracked and what not. it there any special caulking or cement used for those out side seams. should i dig out that old caulking and apply new caulking. should i just leave it alone?
also as for the transom i plan on 3m 5200 those bad boys together screwing the sections together every 3-4 inches and letting them dry. after all thats done and dry i will seal the hole transom wood edges front and back and let it completly dry befor putting it back. i maybe do 3 coats of that sealer stuff i have. i kinda want to put a bigger motor on there as i have a 90hp johnson sitting around. but since im not sure of manufactures max anything i have no idea on what i can do. is there a way to order a new saftey tag or does someone no the info for this boat. i have a buddy who can design a copy tag for it.
other than that this week ill be vacuuming the stuff out and start the center and front wood work. but not befor i get the bottom sealed.

Thats a cool boat. Lots of options of what to do with storage and seating. Should make a great fishing machine.

Got all the lower motor seals ordered. should have the motor finished in a few weeks. still trying to find ideas for how to make the front deck. im thinking a square frame with runners off the top going to each side of the boat with some L brackets riveted to the sides for extra stability then also bolt the frame to the wood flooring

TT You could use 5200, or Sikaflex marine caulking, I used the former, just clean out the old loose caulk and clean well then put on a nice smooth bead.
