Have this 81 Johnson that I picked up the end of last summer and the lower unit is trashed. As a matter of fact when I got it the lower unit was in a bucket in pieces. Not even sure if it's all there but that's mute otherwise he wouldn't have taken it apart.

The motor itself runs very well and is in over-all good shape. Was oringinally just going to use it as a parts motor but then it's 3 years newer than the one I'm running.

I do have the lower gearcase and it also looks to be in good condition. So from looking at BRP parts only the 1980-83 use the same lower set up. Older and the shift linkage changes as does the water pump. Newer and everything changes. Though the pre 1980's 35's from what I can tell all use the same shafts, carriers, seals, driveshaft and pinion gear.

So, aside from just finding another 80-83 for the lower unit how difficult is it to pull the carrier and shafts from a pre 80's unit to put into the original gearcase? Anything special I should look for while it's apart? Any special tools needed?

Thanks!

I have never done one, but I do have an OMC service manual and it looks like a fairly big job. You do need some special puller tools. If you don't have a manual for this motor, it would be advisable to get one for this job.
