You really need an Owners Manual and probably a Service Manual, too, Boxers. Messing with it with no knowledge will do a lot more harm than good.

1. Do not try to start it without water running through it or you risk destroying the

2. Make sure you have gas mixed with outboard oil at a ratio of 50:1

OK, now that that is said: Make sure your gas line is connected between the motor and the tank with the arrow on the bulb pointing toward the motor. Pump the bulb on the fuel line until the bulb is hard. Make sure the gear selector is in neutral. Move the "cold start" lever on the controls up, push the key in to activate the choke, and turn the key to engage the starter motor. The cold start level is like fast idle. After the engine warms up a bit you should be able to release the "cold start" and it should idle normally.

Have fun.:)

Re: 1981 Evinrude 115hp

thanks for the pointers, the engine didn't have one of those bulbs so i bought one and i had to get new fuel and oil, i don't think i connected the bulb right becuse no matter how hard i kept pumping it wouldn't fill, anyway, i manually put the fuel in there and i sprayed the carb with staring fluid and IT WORKED!!! for like 3 seconds then it died, im guesing is either the carburetor or the fuel pump not sucking gasoline at all. now ordered a manual to the engine today, lets see if i can get something out of that.

Don't run the engine on anything other than gas mixed with oil unless somehow you're able to mix oil with your starter fluid. A 2 stroke engine gets it's lubrication from the oil you mix in the gas.

Does the boat have a permanent under deck fuel tank? Basically, not a plastic tank? If so, provided you installed the fuel line and bubble correctly and have enough gas, it should pump fuel up into the engine and the bubble will get hard. If not you might have other issues.

You can try holding the end of the bubble that goes to the gas source up higher than the side that goes to the engine and see if that helps. I had a boat once that wouldn't prime unless you did that for some reason.

If that's the engine in the pictures it looks like a nice clean engine. Get an original manual and do things right if something breaks on it.

Take JB's word for it. I too just bought a new-to-me Ranger with a 100HP motor like yours, although mine had a VRO pump (Never had one with a VRO before). I started it up and ran it out of gas to winterize it. EPIC BAD MOVE. That cost me 26 hours of work to fix the screw up. 10 minutes on this site and I learned what I did wrong, how to fix it, and what to not do further.

Get the manual and listen to these guys. Take it from me, another noob who learned the hard way. Oh, and there is a GREAT sticky in this Johnson section called "TOP SECRET FILE" with instructions on starting the motor. Check it out. ;)

Have fun!

Re: 1981 Evinrude 115hp

I ended up taking the boat to a shop, anyway, I was told that the engine has a compression of 95-115 but one of the pistons has "0" and they told me that it can be that the piston is broken or that it needs new rings in all of them, Its going to cost me about $1200 to get it fixed.

why do engines lose compression?
is it worth getting the engine fixed or should I just forget about it and find another engine?

Thanks for the advice.

It depends on where you are as to what they are worth. In indiana I have bought three 115 close to that year two '77s and a '78 they all run good and I don't have 1200 in all three.

I live in Laredo Tx, and we only have one marine shop. Unless I go to San Antonio Tx which is about 3hrs from here.
