Good day,

Broke rear piece + tip of the skeg on my low hours 9.9 hp OB . (as per Avatar) I suppose it could be used as-is but I would prefer to have it back with a longer skeg like the original. Cost of having it fixed is around $ 200. (Ca). including impeller replacement. I would prefer to fix it myself with a kit but I can only find these kits for 60 hp and above. Anyone knows where I could find a kit custom made for this motor that would simply need to be bolted on ?
Thank you

Try a local machine shop that can weld aluminum. They can likely make an aluminum blank for the tip of your skeg, weld it on and shape it so you can paint. Probably pretty reasonably.

Good luck!

i have never seen a kit for smaller motors, but have seen some nice home made bolt on fixes, that actually looked to be very rugged, but still looked good. just head down to your local metal fabrication shop, they will usually sell you some aircraft grade aluminum plate from their scrap bucket. after that, its just a matter of drilling/tapping/counter sinking and shaping etc. you'd be surprised how nice of a job you can do if you take your time.

You could get one of these....

Blackfin™ Replacement Skeg | Bass Pro Shops

but I would personally get a welder to fit one. If he is good, you will never know it is not original.

i do agree with the welding option. if i remember correctly, the op posted pics of the motor a while back, and it looks near mint, would be worth fixing right. have never seen the "blackfin" skeg replacement tho. some of the reviews mention it has fallen off after a short time. which %90 of the time, when using adhesives, can be blamed on the installer not taking the time to prep everything properly.

As-is or repaired, you won't notice the difference in performance.

I rather meant protection of the prop. There is approx 1 inch missing lenght. I am not worried about the back part. Tx

If your constantly running into things then maybe a complete skeg is a good idea.
If it is the exception its not worth the aggravation smooth it nice with a file and leave well enough alone.
I think the odds of an inch or so saving the prop are slim.

Use as is and stay out of the rocky areas. I've seen a lot of them run for a long time that way.

You guys may have a point, I dont hit bottom that hard very often. That one time was a WOT once in a decade accident. Perhaps I should wait for more severe damage to occur prior to having it fixed ?
Tx for your feedback.

I've seen a lot of skegs look like that in the area I came from and as long as they were holding oil okay the owners just kept on running them.

I have repaired one on a 9.9 that I acquired in that condition. I made & fitted a replacement out of 1/4' aluminum, drained the lower unit & left the plug out so if it got warmer during the welding it would not blow a seal. Then took it to a GOOD aluminum welder, then did a final fitting/grinding when done. Looks original now after repainting.
