1981 Merc 260 Stalls shifting from fwd to reverse

My 1981 Merc 260 is stalling when I shift from Nuetral to Reverse, it shifts and runs fine from Neutral to Forward. It has gotten progressiveley worse through the end of the season. Any suggestions?

Your lower shift cable is on its way out.....
Replace it......​

That's Classic symptoms of a Junk Lower Shift Cable........
Replacement is the Only Cure........
