new to forum and boating, just bought a 1981 ranger with a mercury 150 on it. Did not have alot of money to spend on boa but needed one for me and my son to have something to do together. I am having problems with the motor. It set for two years and alot of the wiring has decayed and broken. I pulled the stator off due to these broken wires. I found a serial number oon the transom and also the same stamped on the motor. it is 430 3909 I am not sure about hp or year. The guy I bought it from had it rebuilt and had the trim replaced. Can anyone on here verify exactly what this engine is and what stator I might need for it. Thanks in advance for an help.

i could not get a match on the ser#, but the part # for a 1981 150 h.p stator is 398-54541A 7. (it will suppersede a few times) also! there may be two laminant types. 5/8 in. and 1/2 in. try to match up parts before instaling them. good luck!

Thanks for the quick responses guys, I really appreciate it. Again I am new to boating, so when I bought the boat the guy said it was a cheater and that it was actually a 175, could the serial number identify which one it is exactly, if not would the stator be the same for both or not. I got this thing to start but it would only run for about three seconds then quit. It was acting like it was flooding with gas pouring out the carbs and it didnt sound like it was firing but did mange to kick over a few times. That is when I got to looking at the wires and noticed the brokin stator wires. Thanks for your help again guys.

hmm I think you have to have the hp for this chart to work...as you see here it could very well be a 76 175 just going by serial #s.

If I were you Id call the guy ya bought it from and try to get as much detail as you could. By cheater, did he mean a 175 motor with a 150 cowl? Or just a hot 150?

Actually, looking at the parts forms it implies that the 75 150hp would be an inline 6 (tower of power I think theyre referred as) meaning all your spark plugs would be in a vertical line.
While it says the 76 175 is a V6 so you would have 3 spark plugs on one side of the motor and 3 plugs on the other

At least I think so
