1982 25hp mercury wont stay running

I just got an 1982 25 hp merc and just can't keep it running. It won;t start unless i turn the enricher all the way. And when i back off the enricher it sputters and dies .

Any help whould be great Thanks

Here is update of what i have done.
I opened up the carb and no crap , changed spark pluggs check compression and both cylinders are at 120psi.
This i what it does when it start up i have to turn the the rich botton all the way right to start. When it start the engine smokes and sputter,back fires though the carb then dies. I am going to check timming next. let me know if anybody has any idea what else this could be

Hey there - I have a 1981 Merc 25hp with somewhat similar problems. When you say you are turning the knob all the way clockwise, are you engaging the enricher valve, or just increasing the idle? On these particular models, I believe the knob only increases the idle until the last notch when it engages the enricher valve also. Have you checked your idle screw to see if the RPM's are too low when the idle knob is turned down? I plan to clean out my carb in the spring and check my float level to make sure it's not allowing fuel to leak by causing too rich a mixture. The main problem I have with mine is cold starting it. I have to "pump" the enricher many times before starting to get it to fire.

I might have found the problem ?? I have a broken reed I think that might fix it??? mybe
