I bought a 1982 Evinrude recently, and upon getting it running again, it seemed to be running hot.

I pulled the lower unit off, and tried blowing air through the water tube, and it is plugged. I then removed the exhaust cover plate, and there is crud built up there. So if the crud is blocking the passageways, what should I do to get it clean?

Any chemical solution?

I would like to remove the piece that the water tube goes into, but the screws are so rusty and cruddy, I would probably break them.

Take a piece of string off from your string trimmer and try working it up through the water jacket that you exposed when you removed the exhaust cover plate. Be patient and continue with the air pressure at the same time. You could also rig up a garden hose to the copper pipe inside the exhaust housing and give her a blow off water under pressure. Have you checked the impeller yet?

The motor just got a new impeller. When I bought it, it was in need of an impeller, and had no impeller housing. I replaced impeller housing, impeller, and the lower seal, and then got it running.

I did break two bolts taking the exhaust housing off, so that will cost some time later. Trying not to break more.

I can try the weedeater trick and will let you know how it goes.

The pickup tube is now clear, so my cooling problems should be on the mend. The bad news, I broke two bolts removing the exhaust housing. That will take a bit of work to repair.

Now if only I could figure out why it is surging....

Tried to get the two broken bolts out of the exhaust housing adapter, but ended up breaking the thing. Another $25 part to order. Good news is thast everything else should go back together ok, and the motor will be better for the experience.

Re: 1982 4 hp Evinrude cooling problems.

few weeks ago a worked on 4hp model.
it was used in salt water.
had also problem to take out bolts going threw 5" adapter.
soak in break fluid for couple days and tap with hamer and manage to relase them.

also under head gasket there was a lot of salt, stoping water to circulate.
change head gasket and do the head surface flatening in auto repair shop.

during puting lower unit back to mid section, be careful with shift rod, its bent at the end.
this end should fit in smal hole in lower unit botom.if you wil NOT fit there will be only FORWARD gear,
and few minuth and lower unit wil float out from lower unit

This motor is one that only has forward gear. To reverse, the motor spins around. I am just happy that the part I broke is only $25...
