First time poster, well here it goes I have this motor that I have electrical problems periodically.

1. When I turn keystart I get the "whistle" from electric choke and then nothing.
2. Motor will fire up when I take wire from hot lead to starter.
3. New wiring harness did not fix keystart problem.
4. Had to run hot wire from small post on the bottom of solenoid to block in order to fire.
5. Motor sat for 3 months this summer and now won't fire.

Checked out wiring harness in motor on continuity tester- everything checked out OK
Checked battery cables on tester OK
Checked Controls on Tester OK

New Solenoid last year, new powerpak year before.
new battery.

Any help would be great.

thanks,

whalebone.

Did you check the Main Fuse under the Cowl? Should be in a Red connector. 20 or 30 AMP.

Hi, Whalebone.

Remove your solenoid.

Thoroughly clean the surfaces that make contact between the solenoid and the engine block.

Reinstall.

Let us know what happens. Good luck. :)

Re: 1982 Johnson 25hp w/electric start

The solenoid has a rubber gasket that it sits in. Could that be the problem?
I mean that it sits in,meaning it is a round rubber gasket that slides over the solenoid and then slides into the solenoid housing which is attached to the starter. I guess it prevents vibration from chipping and destroying the solenoid inside the bracket.

The starter sits in a bracket(housing)that holds the starter/solenoid. Right? what contacts other than the 2posts on side of solenoid and bottom two posts for ignition (yellow/red). The block bolts are tight and corrosion free.

I will keep trying....keep giving me suggestions.

Thanks, Have a great weekend

Fuse is ok on inline. I have had that problem before. It seems that it is a grounding problem.

Just because all wires show good continuity doesn't mean they will conduct full voltage under a load. You say "motor won't fire." Does that mean it won't crank over or does it crank over but won't start? Check your neutral safety switch and your emergency cutoff switch if it has one.

Whalebone
I am assumeing you mean the motor does not turn over. If it turns over but does not start ingnore all below.
Take a volt motor and check voltage at starter solenoid while someone else turn the key. Do you have 12 volts messured from the big battery wire on the solenoid to the bolck?? Should have 12.6 before turn key and should not drop below 10 with the key turned. Does the Solenoid click when you turn key to start??? If it does not click then next check on the solenoid the wire that goes back to your key switch. Does it read 12 volts when the key is turned?? If not Try moveing you shift lever a little and see if neutral start switch is out of adjustment. If still did not get 12 volts either go to the start switch and make sure the start terminal get 12 volts when the key is turned or trace wire back to neutral start switch and check voltage from one side of the neutral start switch to the other. Should read zero while the key is in start postion. If you want you can also check from neutral start switch to engine block on both sides. should be 12 volts with the key turned. By this time should have an idea where your problem.

Good luck and please reply back what you find so other can help you or your fix can help others.

Where is the neutral switch in the controls?
I had a suggestion to replace battery cables. They were old, cheapest way now...will keep posted.

Whalebone, is your motor remote control or tiller. Remote control should have the nuetral switch in the control box. Tiller will have it on the shift linkage on the motor. Look for a small device against the shift cam with 2 wires going to it.

Re: 1982 Johnson 25hp w/electric start

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here it goes I go to dealer to buy a key switch and tell him my problem. He asks me how the solenoid is hooked up and I show him a drawing. Then he asks me where the ground wire on the bottom post is. I said does it have one? YES.... end of story. I bought this engine without a wiring harness and had to go from there to get it running. Now I know that, all the posts have to have positive/ negative connections. I just ran a ground from keyswitch to block and it worked.

Thanks, for the help

Can now winterize in with peace of mind.
