First, I just wanted to say I've really enjoyed learning through this forum as I have been boat shopping. I just purchased a 1982 Lowe 16 ft. aluminum bass boat with a Susuki DT40 on it that reportedly just quit while running on a lake last summer. Owner talked to Brown's Point marine and priced out a CDI unit. First thing I noticed when I brought the boat home is the safety switch on the controls is broken off which I'm guessing leaves the switch closed and shorted to ground. I've read in other posts that this needs to be open circuit to operate? This is where I'll start, make sure I have an open on this switch and see if I get fire. Stay tuned for further details. I also have a shop manual on the way which should help me work through the ignition.
New info as of 8/13: Found out that the wires have been cut off on the back side of the emergency stop switch so from what I understand this would have nothing to do with my no spark issue. Where do I go next? Verify voltages coming into the CDI unit? Then work forward or back depending on what I see? I haven't received my manual yet so I'm not sure what I should see coming into the CDI unit. Can anyone give me some tips here?
