Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Woody, I agree and thanks... That was about 3 good coats of primer yesterday. I knew you'd have a coronary over the rattle can, lol. What I am trying here is the if it's gonna get beat up anyway and I just use the Rusto - rattle can's I conceivably could just quick touch it up as needed. (it is just the trailer after all  )

Thanks SP! I am lucky to have some of the greatest fresh water on earth all around me.

Just yankin yer chain!!! Your theory is a GOOD one. Krylon makes and Appliance Epoxy Paint in a Rattle Can. Pretty Tuff Stuff.

Krylon Epoxy Paints - Gloss White | FullSource.com

I looked at that as well. I've always like the Krylon paints for my outdoor metal things that need paint. I had also not used the Rustoleum professional and decided to use it to match up with the primer. We'll see if the professional version lasted any longer. I'll tell you what the spray pattern is nice and the spray volume was fantastic. You do need to be cautious with it as it would be easy to get a lot of drips with it. It also sprayed from a sideways and upside down position quite well with more than half a can. Once the can got low it had a hard time spraying at awkward angles. I can say that at the tail end of the can it did NOT spit and sputter the way rattle cans tend to. Overall I give the Rustoleum Professional line a good thumbs up for usability. We'll have to wait and see on the durability. I did remove a hub and bearings off one axle last night. I had already painted the center section last week and I was beating the crap out of the inner bearing trying to get it off there. I hit the painted area more than a few times with the mallet and other than a couple of small marks it held up extremely well. Then I got smart and got a gear puller out and duh, was able to hook the bearing and work it right off. typical Craig, try brute force before brain force

Here is last nights progress, 2 coats of white on the main frame of the trailer.

Thanks Gus and Troop! I only strive to stay in your boat building realm, lol

I have some pretty major work on the trailer complete, I'll post up in the morning. but the most important piece was the meeting of a gentleman on craigs list who tonight sold me all the bow seats from his bayliner for a great pricel. I even told him up front that I would be tearing them appart to redo a Sylvan Bass boat. I think I could have chated with Bill for hours tonight. So many good people out there!

I'll catch up the pics of this weeks progress tomorrow. Get ready....; you may actually see a trailer on wheels and lookin sweeet!

Happy Humpday all!

I am blessed the oldest even wants to spend the time with me on this project.

just hung the axle. Just prior to this I packed and installed new bearings& sleeves in the hubs and new bearing keepers.

Wheels are back on!

I'd like to extend the back of the trailer a couple of feet to better support the hull all the way to the transom. I have these steel channels that fit perfectly into the existing trailer. I thought I would just bolt them on and re-install the cross member at the back that was originally there. Thoughts, questions, concerns?

Awesome work on the trailer...looks better than New!

I like the idea of the trailer extensions, and being bolted into the channels, I see no problem whatsoever with them doing their job as support for the transom...

The only thing, and it maybe nothing to worry about...is, if the tongue weight of the fully loaded boat/trailer still falls within the recommended 10%...

Most Excellent!

Not an expert here but I'm with gt, think the axle will have to be moved back some to correct the weight transfer to the tongue.

CW that looks great man. I like the all terrain tires you got on there too.

I would also question the the tongue wieght too. With alittle math, you can check the wieght with a bathroom scale. It may have to be done after ya finish the boat. A trailer cruise'n down the road without the correct amount of tongue wieght is something too see. But it is dangerous.

It maybe the picture messing with us CW.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks all... What you're missing on the trailer is the 9 foot tilt part of the tongue. I agree with being careful on the tongue weight. The bow stop is movable and I always felt there was too much weight on the tongue originally. I'm not moving the boat back any just adding extensions to support the back couple of feet that hung over previously and caused a little bit of a hook. If anything this should help to balance it better weight wise.

Oh and those tires are only temporary. the rims don't match and neither do the tires. I plan on picking up a new pair of matching rims & tires closer to move day.

TEMPORARY! Whatever man. Get another to match.

I thought about it, but they are both really odd sized. I took both wheels into a local tire shop and they had a heck of a time finding a tire to fit. They said it was an old discontinued size you hardly see any longer. That and I'm crying uncle on the grinding rust, these things are junk! at $50-$60 per wheel I can get 2 that match and I don't have to paint them, lol

Thanks SP, after we move... I got WAY to much to get done before then and I'm sure we'll need to fertilize the ol money bush about that time.

Looking GREAT!
Thanks!

Happy Friday all! now get to work on your boats!

I remember those trailer restoration days. You're doing great as usual. I LOVE seeing your son working with you. That will Pay HUGE dividends in the future.
