Hi,

My 83 70hp Johnson has some rusted parts on the transom that are pretty much frozen by the rust. I haven't been able to raise my engine for over a year. I've tried rust remover, banging with a hammer and etc to no avail. Now, I've found a complete transom assembly from a 77 70hp Johnson and was wondering if I could use the parts from it? Possible? My model is a J70ELCTE and the 77 transom is a 70EL77S. Can I interchange these parts?

Thanks...

Im a bit confused, which is easy to do :)

Are you referring to a lower unit (gearcase), or the transom bracket which support the outboard?

A "transom" a transom is the surface that forms the stern of a vessel, or the rear wall of your boat.

Transom bracket that mounts the engine to the transom of the boat.

Let me edit that after thought.

Ensure that the lengths are identical, since the 15 or 20 inch brackets differ. Could you supply pics as to why they are not usable?

i asssume this does not have trim & tilt. have you tried removing the locking pin, could just be broken cable that locks the tilt in reverse.

No tilt and trim. Everything on the transom bracket is frozen by rust. It can still steer left and right though it needs the steering cable changed as well due to some rust (The boat was left on a lift for years in Ocean City. Lots of spray got to it.). All the levers on the transom mount that you use to unlock the motor to lift it are rusted tight. I wish I could be more specific but I don't know the names for them. The one long ping that has an L shape at one end and a small locking lever at the other is really rusted tight. Can't budge it and I've tried most everything. If I can find the replacement parts I can just cut all these off and beat them out with a drift or something. If the entire transom mount can be replaced, so much the better. Right now I'm just hoping the parts are interchangeable with the transom mount from the 77 model I found. Does this make sense?

Tims outboard salvage can likely help. I like dealing with them. 218 682 2331
