Hi guys,

I just tried out my boat for the first time in 2 yrs and all in all it ran great. Last year was a rebuild year since I didn't have much time to go to the lake, so I went ahead and changed the impellar. I also took off all three carbs and cleaned them.

Now the only problems are:

1. I imagine that the carbs must not have been cleaned in a very long time since I am now idling way too high in neutral. Is there an idling screw that can be adjusted on theses motors? Oh and I don't have an rpm gauge. Should I get one?

2. The throttle cable seems to need a bit of adjustment. I'm thinking I will start by adding some good grease and some WD40 first to see if this is the problem. I seem to have to push it way down there to get WOT. Everything else seems fine concerning the throttle cable (neutral, reverse, etc).

3. The starter turns over for about 3 seconds on average ( sometimes more and sometimes less), then the clutch assembly (little gear at the top that makes the motor turn over) seems to go back down while the starter is still turning making a vvvvvmmmmmm sound. The starter has been doing this ever since I've owned it (6yrs now) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what to try to fix it as it is annoying at time especially on the first run of the year where you really need to turn the engine over to get the new fuel to go through the system and fill the bowls.

Could some of you give me advice on theses issues??

Beside these inconveniences the motor performed real well. Max 42 mph on a sixteen foot fiberglass bowrider... can't complain about that.

Cheers

Re: 1983 85hp need help to set idle speed

You need a tach to do this right.
1.No adjustment for idle on the carbs, the towershaft adjusts the idle.Again you need a tach.Air screw on the carb should be turned out 1 to 1 1/8 turns.
2.Take the cables off and start new.Get a manual and follow instructions.
3.The starter sounds like it needs to be re-built.It dis-engages too soon.I had this on a Bronco(drove me nuts).Jerry
