1983 Black Max 150 Problem

I have 1983 Black Max V6 150, purchased last year. It is on a Ranger 350V. It ran good once last fall, 50+mph with 21p prop, jumped right up on plane. This summer took it in because could not get over 1700rpm WOT. Mechanic checked comp at 120 all 6 cylinders, replaced fuel pump diaphram, new plugs, checked carbs -- said were OK, checked powerpacks -- said were OK, ran on muffs and said ran great. Told me no ignition problems, boat should run great. At his suggestion I dumped all fuel, flushed tanks and put in fresh fuel. Took to lake this weekend for first time since checked, will rev good with no load but the minute I engage prop, 1700 rpm at WOT is all it will do.

Several guys at lake said I need to replace power packs and coils even though mechanic said they were OK. Any ideas? I also noticed the idle stabilizer is gone after the last trip to the mechanic, is this thing needed?

Thanks for all ideas!:)

First thing I would do is pull the high speed jets from the carbs and ck them when you remove them keep them in order as the are usually different sizes while they are out prime the engine with the bulb to make sure each inlet needle is alright and after replacing the jets reprime with the bulb to make sure they are not leaking, then test run the engine if it still is acting up we can give you ign specs

Revving in neutral or on muffs tells you very little and could do damage. Most likely scenario is that you are not running on all cylinders. Switchboxes can be funny. When they are failing, they will sometimes work at one engine rpm range, but then fail at others.

I wouldn't touch the carb jets at this time. Here is a page with some good troubleshooting advice:

Re: 1983 Black Max 150 Problem

Finally, success!!! After taking the boat back to the same mechanic last fall, and being told there were no problems, I parked the boat until I did some mechanic research. Found a mechanic 50 miles away who fixed the problem in 3 days. Motor had a power pack that was not firing consistently and needed the stator replaced. BOAT RUNS GREAT!

By the way, if you are around Truman Lake in MO, THE BOAT DOCK SHOP at the Bucksaw turnoff on 7 hwy (Coal,MO) provides not only great service but at a reasonable fee.

If parts disappear without your specific approval, I'd worry about the integrity of the mechanic.

Just a note to clarify, the idle stabilizer was removed by the previous mechanic, not the one who fixed the problem. (I found the stabilizer the next trip out in the livewell.)
