Need help in diagnosing a problem with my sons motor.
Here is the relevant info:

1983 Evinrude 25hp Model: E25ELCTD

Original symptoms:
Stopped running while underway. Would not restart.

Actions taken:
Round #1: Disassembled and cleaned carb, replaced most
fuel lines, filters, plugs.
Results: Would try to start on occasion if starting fluid is
shot into cylinders. Would not continue to run.

Round #2(sat idle for 8+ mos): Rebuilt fuel pump, rebuilt carb, replaced
remainder of fuel lines, replaced pump bulb, replaced control
box (flaky key switch), pulled flywheel and inspected stator.
New plugs, fresh gas. Kill switch (lanyard) removed from circuit.
Results: Started and ran great(on hose) for about 10 minutes. Started
running rough and died. Has not restarted since.

Current conditions:
Compression: 115psi(#1) & 114psi(#2). Holds pressure for
2+ minutes.
Spark is weak to non-existent.
Stator resistance measurements slightly high(according to Clymer
manual. Measurements made with 41/2 digit DMM:
Yg to Y = 1.08 ohms Target = .22 - .32 ohms
Yg to Yb = .56 ohms Target = .22 - .32 ohms
Yg to Gnd = infinite Target = infinite
Attempt power pack output test per manual using same DMM. No
voltage measured.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi - Welcome to the forum.

On engine FAQ there is a general troubleshooting procedure - good to start with. I would do all tests with the big red connector, engine to boat, unplugged. Eliminates errors in boat from interferring. Just be aware, if it starts you can only kill it by pulling gas hose of.

hello
dude ya checked the battery charging part of the stator. at least the results are good :) . first remove the black/yellow wire from the pack circuit. do this by either unplugging it if it is a single wire or pushing the female socket from the rubber(amphenol) connecter then plug the pack back up. it should be on a 3 wire with an orange and an orange/blue as well.

that just removed the kill circuit in its entirity. retest spark. if you have spark, trouble shoot a kill circuit short to ground. if no spark test the brown and brown/yellow wires from the stator to the pack. should have about500 ohms or so. the sensor coil should have 40 ohms or so. sensor coils are white/black and black/white. test each wire from the connector from the stator to ground. none should show continuity to ground. you vcannot test pack output with a standard DMM. at best you have to use a DVA adaptor.you should have a type 2 magneto with a sensor coil. I dont have my manuals but I think thats what it is.
try that and see if it helps. the same ign was used from about 79 to about 85 0r 86 on the 20-40 hp models.
good luck and keep posting.
Ps all was from memory. if someone else has a different view let me know. I was looking at a 79 35 while remembering :)

Thanks for the replies! :)

Punched out the black/yellow and ran a spark check. Very weak. No spark on second, third, and
fourth try.
Measurements into the other stator connector
show the following:

White/Black Black/White 38ohms
Brown Brown/Yellow 514ohms

Things seem to indicate a bad pack. Any other ideas?
