1983 force/chrysler 85 hp - timing mark on flyweel

I am about to resync the carbs and the timing on this motor as per sticky by Frank. Everything seems quite simple xcept that I don't seem to have the three marks on the flywheel indication 28, 30, and 32 degrees for timing. Attached is a pic. Could it be that the mark to the right is 32? I welcome your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks in advance
Patrick

Mark to the right is 0 or TDC. mark to the left is either 30 or 32 Before TDC. Remember direction of flywheel rotation and which mark passes the pointer first. By 1983 I believe timing had already been retarded to 30 degrees so that mark should be 30

Thanks for the info Frank. I did the sync and link, tested compression 150psi each cylinder, adjusted timing at WOT te be exact with the mark on engine, adjusted carb air screws to 1 and 1/8 th out, changed fuel pump diaphragm, and two check valves (figured I would do this since no work had been done on fuel pump since 2002) Just have to find time to put her on the muffs and test her. My timing mark was off by about 8 mm to the left of the 30 degree mark on my flyweel at wot. Next (assuming it starts ok), I'll put her in the water and adjust the idle to 750-800 in forward, do some holeshots and let you all know how it goes. Oh yeah let's hope that my tach works, I just installed one this weekend (faria square tach set to number 4 for 20 pole operation). I love this forum.

Re: 1983 force/chrysler 85 hp - timing mark on flyweel

So Yesterday I finally found the time to start the boat in a barrel of water. New gas mixed 50:1. She started right away but oh boy~! she was idling at 2000 rpm, so I adjusted the idling screw on the timing shaft to bring down the idling to 1000 rpm. Good spray of water coming from exhaust, thermostat and engine luke warm to the touch. Tach works great so far. Just need to bring it to the water and do a real in water test. The only thing I noticed was that after a minute or two of idling, just a little bit of gas was sitting in the front throat of the bottom carb. Is that normal or does that mean that I have to adjust the mixture screw on the bottom carb? Again Thank you for your expertise. I learn a little more every day.

So that black mark is 0,and the notch thats metal and built into the flywheel is 30?
I may have the same issue.

Because reeds can stand open .010 and because they don't close immediately, there is always a little "spit-back" of fuel/air through the carbs when the engine is running. This is more pronounced on engines where a single carb services a single cylinder. That is why the air box has a hose at the bottom to recirculate that spit-back into the bottom of the manifold.

Remember that in the 3 cylinder 3 carb engines, each carb is operating in "pulses" of air, not a steady stream. Yeah, at higher speeds, inertia and air volume will make it approach steady stream but at idle--pulsing and spit-back.

So, yes, it can be normal to have a little fuel sitting in the carb throat. As long as the fuel does not pour out when you pump the primer bulb, then float level and inlet needle assembly is good.

Thanks again Frank! Your a real asset to this forum and we really appreciate the time you take to answer our posts.

mick97: Yes the black mark (black line) to the right is 0 degrees TDC and the more faded line to the left of it is 30 degrees.
