Make sure you let that PL cure a Minimum of 3 full days before you attempt to do any glass work. I will continue to cure and outgas that long and if you lay glass over it while that is still doing that it will cause air bubbles in the glass and all kinds of issues. I'd really suggest waiting 4-5 days to make sure it is really cured. How much PL did you use between the outerskin and the wood transom? Did you use a 1/4" toothed trowel to make sure you got total coverage between the two?

ST. bummer about the injury. Glad to see you are back in the saddle.
For me, getting that transom in was a turning point in my rebuild. Keep on rollin'

I ended up using 2 of the large (28 oz) tubes of adhesive. I did use a trowel to spread the PL evenly on the transom and the hull. Thanks for the info on the cure time, I was thinking three days would be good but I'm not sure I will be able to get to it till next weekend anyhow. Looks like you are about ready for a splash on the Flamingo!

Thanks! I am sure the project will build some momentum now that I am back at it. Target is to get the boat wet this season, of course down in Texas boating season runs till October!

Good to see u back! I know what you went thru with the injured knee, I hurt my left knee 2 weeks ago. It was the lcl. I did it trying to slide my new engine that was still on the wood pallet across the garage floor. I hope it doesn't take 3 months to get back to normal. Yikes! What makes it even worse is all this beautiful weather we are having so early here in TX... Good luck to ya!

Where the PL is extra deep, @ cove/fillet or edges, cover it w/ a heavy mil plastic (freezer zip lock thickness) & it will minimize the bubbling as the PL off gases & cures...

Here's a few pix & a write-up from a PL stitch & glue ply boat build.

Re: 1983 Glastron X17 restoration

Just a short update from this weekend, I was able to tab in the transom with two layers of 1708 all the way around. I may have a few small air bubbles, but hopefully nothing serious. I plan on letting the resin cure and skinning the transom with two layers of 1708. Even though it may not be the best idea, I have some epoxy resin on order for the edges of the keyhole. Looking forward to bedding the stringers soon (off the hull, PB) and getting the deck on. Still lots of work to be done!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and encouragement! I was able to skin the transom in two layers of 1708 tonight, I think it went pretty smoothly. My goal is to get the stingers bedded and at least partially fiberglassed in by the end of the weekend. Here is the latest pic:

Slowly but surely this project is moving towards splashdown!

Have you ensured that the transom is the proper thickness for the outdrive??? That is a critical thing to do.

Thanks Wood, that has been on my mind. I believe the thickness will be correct, but I need to measure it once the keyhole is opened back up.

EDIT: I guess my memory was faulty. I am still looking through my old notes to verify, but I believe the way the Volvo I/O is setup the transom thickness is not critical. The reason for this (I think) is that the motor and the outdrive are bolted together directly, without relying on the transom for proper alignment/spacing. Looking at my old pictures and the workshop manuals would seem to confirm this. Better make sure!

Glad to see you back at it, and don't sweat the thickness on the AQ.

Re: 1983 Glastron X17 restoration

So today brought incremental progress. I was able to get the stringers shaped and dry fitted. I made a brace to hold the stringers in place, with shims used to keep the stringers from touching the hull:

Tomorrow I plan on making some PB and getting the stringers bedded. Slowly but surely, it is nice to be back at it!

LOL, Wood any advice/input is always welcome! I was able to get the stringers bedded this evening, and the 1708 cut out for the tabbing. Tomorrow I will get the stringers done.

South Texan, I have been reviewing your thread and things are looking very good. Sometimes I see the boats after the caps come off and wonder where to start, but you have cleaned yours out nicely and your work looks great. I know life pulls you away from time to time but hang in there and keep up the good work. One thing I have learned is that these guys on iboats can help you do anything. Can't wait to see more.
