1983 johnson 35hp engine miss ???

I have a 1983 Johnson 35hp tiller steer that i just purchased and in stalled. Ran fine at home, took the boat out and during acceleration the boat had what I'm describing as an intermittent miss. Felt as If I was hitting something in the water..checked for that and that wasn't the case. Pulled the plugs and checked them, clean and normal...is this a possible driveline problem ??

did it feel like a heavy clunk. and kind of vibrated the boat. if so it's sounds like a bad clutch dog in the lower unit. or a mis adjusted shift shaft.

It exactly felt like a big clunk...so...how do i remove it ...do i need special tools ?? or should i take it and have it done ??? many thanks
