I recently bought a 1983 70 hp johnson than had been sititng for a few years. I soaked the carbs and tried to start it. It will almost start or kinda of start and then dies. Good spark on all three. I cannot get a firm bulb, I noticed that the electric choke also has a gas line going to it and then comming back off it two little lines that go back to the top and middle carbs. I assume this is how it is choked. I also notice that when I had the carbs apart and would manually hold the neddle valve down I could still blow air through all three carbs? Am I right in concluding the gas is being recirculated back through the choke and I will not get a firm bulb? As I said I just soaked the carbs then cleaned out the jets with a wire sprayed them with carb cleaner, compressed air and reassembled. I did not get the kits was hoping to get by with out them. Sorry for the long post.

Daddy, I went there before I started. It did not explain about being able to blow through the carb even with the needle seated.

When the needle is all the way into the seat you should not be able to blow thru it. If you can, the needle & seat needs replacing. When you cleaned the carbs what did you soak them in? You'll need to get kits to finish the job properly.

Nothing recirculates back thru the primer. If you squeeze the bulb and it never gets hard the gas is probably just blowing past the needles you mentioned that aren't seating.

The primer will have a T in one of the 2 small hoses and prime 2 of the 3 cylinders. The other small hose primes the other cylinder.

I soaked them in the regular carb cleaning solution that is made for carb cleaning. I will take them back apart tomorow and order the kits from iboats. thanks guys.
