I have been battling back and forth with this engine for a couple of months now and I am still unsure of how to fix this one. I can get her started but sometimes used a spray of starting fluid, by the way is starting fluid bad for the engine. Then once I have her started she will idle fine but when I try to get up to speed I have no power at all, it runs as if the boat is full of water and tops out at 2000-2500 rpm. What could the problem be?

If you have compression and spark, in all probability the carburetors are fouled. Starting fluid has no lubricating properties. If you're going to spray anything into the carbs as a starting agent, use a fuel/oil premix spray.

what would be the best way to remedy this problem do you think. To rebuild the carbs or check the plugs and wires. Is it possible to clean out the carbs with the can stuff because I am not to familiar with the carburator on this engine. And if I would need to rebuild the carbs where could I find the kit the cheapest. Also when you were talking about the starting fluid is there anyway that because I was using that somewhat often I could have done some internal damage. Thank you for replying.

Now this sounds familiar! my 140 did the same thing. I slowly replaced all the electrical parts before i realized that the head gasket was letting water in the cylinder. runs great on land?I wouldnt hesitate to replace the head gaskets.Especially if you plan to keep it.

The gasket/water in cylinder is excellent advice.
If one of your plugs look steam cleaned or just clean compared to the others- that's water!
Replacing the head gasket will do the trick!

tazman,

Your engine is not getting up to speed because it is not firing on all four cylinders.

The reasons could be several.

1. Check the spark on all four.

2. Look at the spark plugs. If one or more look real clean (like brand new), you may have a head gasket leak.

3. Check compression on all four. They should be over 100 psi and with 5-10% of each other.

4. YOur carburetors are fouled. They will need to be dismantled and thoroughly cleaned.

Manuals are available on this iboats header page, at the bottom. The OEM manuual is the best, however Seloc will get you through basic diagnosis and carb. rebuild.
