Hi, I read posts here for two days before tearing into the motor on this bass boat. It is a 1984 150HP V6 Evinrude.

The boat would only run in gear with the enrichment "choke" activated after buying it from a guy who had it stored for 4 years. Here is what we did:
* removed carbs and cleaned them with compressed air and carb cleaner
* plugged VRO pump and mixed gas 50:1 manually
* checked for spark at each cylinder

Now the boat wuns in forward gears but only reaches 4200 RPM... that is OK, but at WOT you can hit the enrichment and BAM! It FEELS LIKE YOU DOWN-SHIFTED! I mean WOW! Then it reashed 5700 RPM holding in the enrichment/choke button.

So... we thought... maybe a fuel pump... but if I pump the bulb, it goes no faster.

Thoughts?

Is the fuel pressure raised with the enrichment?

It must be something simple!

Thanks!

Its starving for fuel. Go back thru the carbs. Soak them and put in new kits. Let me know when you need part numbers for new pistons.

WOW...that must be some seriously lean run there!!!
Running lean is the biggest killer of these outboards! & Dhadley is considered by most of us here, as the King of johnnyrude Gurus!!!

Do as Dhadley suggests or that engine will be fried real quick (if you haven't burt it up already)!

Basscat1....you beat me to it!
That is some LEAN RUNNNIN'!

TIM...That engine gets ALL of its lube along with its fuel...Lean run = VERY HOT COMBUSTION + no lubrication = burnt pistons/blown engine!
DO NOT RUN IT WITHOUT REPAIRING!

DH: do you think the kits are necessary?

I understand soaking them may help fuel flow, but isn't the kit just gaskets and a new needle/seat?

Please explain to me what I am helping with the kit. It's not that I think you are anything but RIGHT... I just don't understand how a needle/seat and gaskets will help.

Also, is the carb dip stuff at Autozone/Advance (Berryman I think) good stuff to use?

Thanks for your help.

The new gaskets will prevent any air leaks. The new needle & seat will assure proper inlet flow. I havent used that particular carb cleaner but I'm sure it must be OK. We use Engine Tuner from Bombardier (Evin / John).

I use Berryman Chemtool dip all the time. You must remove all rubber parts first. I think the only rubber parts you have except gaskets is the o-ring that keeps the throttle cam roller in place.

Thanks DH and Walker... I use to have trouble getting float heights set on an old Dodge Charger 2 barrel, but that was many carbs ago... I learned to love the Holleys with externally adjustable floats.

This is gonna give me a bad dream tonight! Haha

Hopefully these carbs aren't as particular!

Thanks again.

Those are some really simple, basic carbs. No big deal. Nothing like the carbs you talked about.

fireman, thanks for the offer. It is actually my buddy's boat. He lives in Mt. Vernon and is removing the carbs today and bringing them over for soaking.

He is going to check with Lynn's and other places to find kits today.

If we get stuck you will be hearing ring-ring-ring on that number :)

Thanks to everyone for the great info.
-- Tim

Re: 1984 150hp Evinrude, runs faster with choke activated on top end

I called a local place for kits, $25.19 each for the 3 carbs... $75...

I spoke to the guy about the problem, and he immediately said, "The high speed circuit is still clogged. Soaking those Evinrude carbs won't do any good. We actually use a cleaning kit to get into the orifices."

So, I am still going to SOAK them, but I need to find a way to clean the passages I suppose.

I was able to unscrew the air-jets near the outside of the carb, but the jets in the float bowls were waaaay doooowwwn deep, and I was afraid I would booger up the passages leading to them.

Any recommendations on carb cleaning tools?

Tim, I use a strand of brass wire cut out of a multistrand wire, and kind of do a flossing if I can get the wire all the way through a passage. I'm from Grandview, IN. I have found that Lynn's is a good place for info.

The kits are part number 439076 and list for 21.99 each. We've never had to use any kind of a cleaning "kit" but we use the Engine Tuner.

The jets should be removed with a jet driver, not a screw driver. The blade is a bit thicker and does not taper. You can make one out of a screwdriver though.

If the jets are varnished in place you may have to soak them a bit before you remove them.

Lynn's is a merc dealer. Talk to Sib's. Using the small flexible wire is what I use along with compressed air. Gonna try to get to the river sat or sun while the cats are hitting good.

Tim, if you make a screwdriver it needs to be a skinny shank and narrow head, but a blade as thick as will fit into the jet like Dhadley says. On my 88spl, the driver that fits the high speeds will will not fit the low speeds, but one that works on the low speeds should be OK on the high speeds. Just worry about the blade being too wide and rounding off the threads ahead of the high speed jet as you back it out.
Henderson grainery, Newburgh Dam, Cannelton Dam or Mt. Vernon? I've heard they are good at the grain loading station 4 miles down from Henderson.

I usually fish Consolidated grain as that is where we haul our crops to. If they don't bite there then I go just below Mt. Vernon to ADM. Seems they bite one place or the other. Funny thing about them though is you need to cook them about five to ten minutes longer than the cats I catch in the rest of the river. Finally figured out that since they are grain fed they retain the corn/soybean oil in their systems and takes a little longer to cood it out. Taste the same. Both unloading places are within 1 mile of each other. One is 3/4 mile upstream and the other 1/4 mile downstream.

Ha! We catch them below Newburgh Dam.

I thought they tasted like dirt until someone told me to just let them soak in water overnight.... then SQUEEEEEEZE it out so much you think you are hurting the meat.

It works great... good fish... not as good as my bass, but pretty good eatin!

Re: 1984 150hp Evinrude, runs faster with choke activated on top end

We just disassembled the carbs again. The kits have some "freeze plugs" in them, so we knocked the old ones off... never cleaned that last time.

The only worry I have right now is the fuel inlets are black plastic, and I am worried the carb cleaner could do some damage there, but I really have no way to remove them properly.

The dip says to soak 15 minutes.

In the past on motorcycles I have used it overnight... I have an appointment in 2 hours that will last 2 hrs, so 5 hrs in the dip sounds like a decent compromise.

Thanks for the advice, and keep it coming!
