i recieved a 16' sylvan, i have a 40hp motor, will that work ok for just normal fishing, or is that to small for this boat? i think it says 90hp is the largest it can handle, cant afford a new motor right now, just want the 40 to work

40hp should be fine for normal fishing, just don't expect the thing to be a rocketship!

Of course 40hp will be ok for fishing. Unless, of course, when you are not fishing you want to waterski!

I'd say you have a chance at making that work.
The Sylvan is a bit on the heavy side, but I think you will get it up on plane.

One concern though.
Is the transom 20" high?
If so, does the motor have a 20" driveshaft?

Take a look at the picture in this link.
Notice the two red lines, which indicate the top of the transom, and the bottom.
These should line up with mouonting bracket, and the anti-cavitation plate of the motor.

I had a 1982 Sylvan with a 50HP Johnson that would do 31 MPH with 2 people and minumim gear. The 40 should be fine for fishing, my Sylvan jumped up on plane fairly easy with the 50.
