CARBURETOR REPAIR KIT

Yes I have already purchased 2 kits. The carbs are being cleaned and re built as we speak. A new jet and fuel filter are on their way. Hopefully they will be here tomorrow.

Re: 1984 Evinrude 140 Help,

Do you have a fuel/water separator on board? If you do, depending on style, you may want to change the element or drain it. Your problem sounds really familiar. If you don't have one, please install one asap. You will be amazed as how many problems with the motor are iliminated with one. Also, the motor will run rough especially during idle a vacuum leak is suspect around the gaskets. You can find out by spraying a aquaous solution with soap around the backing plates or the carbs and visually inspect the bubbles. (maybe a carburator mounting bolt has become loose?) Finally, without taking the carbs off, you can check the low and high speed jets by just unscrewing them, and spraying carburator cleaner through them as well. In fact, you can spray carburator cleaner through them without removal, just use the little tube provided. A good squeeze and you done. But that doesn't fix the problem, only details if more exploratory is needed, and usually does. Those little tubes from the bowls get clogged with a rubbery-greasy substance. Caused by the ethanol additives that eat away at the interior fuel lines that get clogged in those little tubes causing a rough or coughing symtom. Another cleaner you can use is break cleaner or (1,1,1) It is dry cleaning fluid that can breakdown the residue of the ethanol breakdown of rubber components. Are the jets spitting fuel? Are the fuel lines loose? If you do a carburator rebuild, make sure your floats are calibrated throughout the 4 evenly. Lastly, you should consider replacing all the fuel lines with new and the proper hose straps put out by Bombardier. A dealer item, well worth the money for peace of mind. Good Luck!!

Thanks for all of this great info. Im not sure if you read above but last night when I took the carbs off I realized that one of the jets was completly missing. I have ordered a new one. I have the carb kits required for a full rebuild. Im guessing and hoping that the missing jet was the culprit in this situation.

Re: 1984 Evinrude 140 Help,

Here is an update. Replaced the missing jet and now the motor idles like a charm. We actually have to use the key to shut off the motor. We never had this happen even when the motor was brand new so im guessing the jet was never installed at the factory. So thats the good news. The bad news is that the motor is good for 20 secs of the dock and thats it. Stalls and pump is hard but squeezed and we get another 20 secs of good operation. So the fuel pump has been ordered. I should have ordered it from day one like I wanted to. And to add insult to injury, so far it has been the nicest weekend of the year, and a long weekend to boot. What have I done to deserve this????? LOL

I doubt you need an entire fuel pump. Someone already mentioned that you can take the fuel pump apart and inspect the diaphram. It is a thin piece of rubber which may tear and cause the fuel pump to fail. The diaphram is a really cheap part to replace, and really easy to inspect.

I would do a decarb ASAP, I did one this weekend on an old 55 hp and now she idles perfectly and will over-rev the prop I've been using for a year. Now I need a higher pitch prop, and my boat will have a new top speed. Decarb with seafoam and be prepared for a smoke show.

You need to start by ordering the OMC service manual for that engine and go through a methodical troubleshooting process - - else you will spend the summer writing posts here. Also beware of throwing parts at these engines based on guesses (like the fuel pump). Check things like spark, compression, sync & link, air in the fuel lines, fuel pressure etc. - - check the FAQ on bringing back old engines.

Re: 1984 Evinrude 140 Help,

I am having the new fuel pump installed tonight. Im 99% sure its the problem. I am happy I took the carbs off and had them cleaned up totally. The missing jet has been replaced and now the motor idles like a dream. Better then it ever idled from day 1 brand new. I had to make some calls today as the pump I ordered had wires coming off of it and my old orig. pump was a no wire pump. I could not find the extra harness (174710) I needed to order seprate for the warning stuff on the wired pump but a couple dealers told me to install the pump and leave that stuff disconnected and I wont have a problem. I sure hope they are right. Getting on the lake and enjoying whats left of my Northern Manitoba summer is my main concern, not the warning beepers. I will keep you posted on the results of the new pump.
