I got a compression gauge and today I am going to be checking the compression of my 1984 6hp. What are some tips for me while doing this ? And what are numbers I should be looking for ? And what should I be aware of ? I have never done a compression test before. I have watched some YouTube videos but any advice will be greatly appreciated.

There's nothing difficult about it, pull out the plugs, screw in the gauge, pull the rope. some people open the throttle to the max, others don't, I've tested it both ways and get the same resutls, so just do it the same for each cylinder. I have three of those motors and they normally read low compared to other motors, which could be 80PSI or lower, don't worry about it if runs well. Also gauges can give very different reading from each other, so there's no good way of comparing motors if they've been tested with different gauges. Your gauge may read 85 on a motor and a different gauge may read 110, so all you're looking for is the two cylinders being close to each other, a wide spread between the cylinders indicates a problem.

yeah, a few pulls until the needle stops rising, then on to the other cylinder. Some insist plug wires should be grounded when pulling over. I don't do that, but others might make the case, and describe the process in more detail. Keep the boots away from the cylinders as gas fumes could ignite.

I had few of this type of motors. The best one had 145 psi(start at one pull) and the worst(but stil runs and start after few puls) had 90 psi
