1984 Evinrude Yachtwin 6hp Fuel Pump Difference - Found One Cheaper Online

I was looking today for a new fuel pump for my 1984 Evinrude Yachtwin 6hp - On most everything I have found it shows part number 0388685 as the fuel pump replacement part. It runs $106

I then found one that looks exactly like it, and even says for 1992 or older 6hp motors - and it is part number 397839 - and only runs around $35

Does anyone know the difference in these part numbers by any chance ? or if the budget $35 fuel pump will do the same as the $100 one will ?

I was going to order one but now I am not sure which one to get. The $35 looks exactly like the one I currently have on the motor, and the $106 just looks similar, and not identical.

Anyone have any thoughts or input on this before I purchase?

I would never buy / need a new pump.---The only thing that goes wrong is the diaphragm.---About $ 6.00 and easy to install.

I stripped the main screw out of the middle that holds the hose and filter on the pump. I will have to get a new one to replace that piece since I cannot find it by itself, and it does not come with the kit - So I am looking to buy a new one.

I don't really care about it being new, just functional. I don't have another one or access in any way to get another one other than purchasing a new one online.

I would simply run a tap in there and use a slightly bigger screw.

OMC never offered a repair kit for these pumps, only replacement pumps.

A repair kit is available from Sierra, but of course it contains all the bits and pieces except the damaged pump body so no help to the OP

They are a bit tricky to repair ( Leeroy says a PITA)

Racerone's suggestion might work but Id look at filling the stripped hole with a filled epoxy ( eg JB Weld ) and redrilling and re tapping to take the original screw.
Or even degrease the pump body but not the screw. Fit the screw back in with JB Weld. Unscrew the screw when the JB Weld has set to leave a perfect new thread in the hole.
( Its my standard trick for fitting self tapping screws in GRP)

I'd avoid buy a cheap replacement ..... I guess Sierra can supply a complete new pump at a lower price than an OEM replacement.

I've wrapped screw threads with plastic wrap, and dabbed a little bit of epoxy on them. Can seat them, then back them out when the epoxy sets. The little parts in that pump have gotten smaller as I've gotten older and my thumbs have gotten larger. I just grit my teeth and buy a new pump -- like to get the OEM version through a local repair shop when I need a replacement.

Yeah. The OEM kit contains the little air dome support and the diaphragm support, think the Sierra kit doesn't include both. It's moot for me anyway, because the stuff is just too small for me to work with. Thumbs, eyesight, patience...

For those who say no parts available.----Diaphragm is 331307 at $4.60------Repair kit is 393088 from Marineengine at $11.-----Factory kit would come with instructions.----------And for $106 I would pick up 2 or 3 complete parts motors from dealer / shop that I know. No need to invest in a new pump here.

Kevin, the difference in the pumps is the direction that the outlet fitting points. Trouble is, so many pictures are generic, so you really don't know what you are getting till you have it in your hand. If I can believe the picture I'm looking at, the $35 one points straight down. Of course, you can re-route the hose unless there is an obstruction in the way. The inlet fitting can be rotated to any one of 4 positions, so that one is not an issue.

Id always assumed that because there was no breakdown of the pump, apart from the filter, shown in the parts catalog that there were no OEM parts available for it.
They show a complete breakdown of the later type I believe.
I'd not realised that all the parts were contained in the repair kit. Logical though i suppose when you think about it

I keep several of these repair kits on hand. It's not a difficult task but you do have to follow the directions exactly. If you buy the OEM kits they send really nice sets of directions. I take pictures of the orientation of the nozzles and keep them oriented that way throughout the process. It has worked for me every time. I have replaced a couple pumps because people ask me to but i think the OEM kit is $11...

So the $70 price difference is just in the direction of the in and outlet ? I just want to make sure I'm still getting everything with the $35 fuel pump as I would with the $106 fuel pump.

Give it a try. Buy the $35 pump and try it. Could be fine -- could be what's currently on there. Maybe buy a kit too (OEM more complete, with useful instructions, and price essentially the same). Save the current pump for parts.

Yes, they are the same pump, just assembled differently.

I have that pump on my '88 6hp and it works perfectly the only thing different on it is the back of the pump where it bolts on to the motor it is protruded out more(if you look close at the pic of it you can see what I mean.) and allows for minimal clearance of the cowl it gives ours about 3/8's of an inch.
