I recently picked up a 1984 Force 50 for $125 of craigslist. After doing some research on parts availability for these motors, I found lots of parts have been discontinued or 'obsolete'. Also, it seems a water pump kit costs over $100. The motor turns over and has compression, but I haven't had the chance to run it.

Does anyone know if I should keep this motor or get rid of it because I won't be able to maintain/repair it cheaply or even be able to find the parts? I would appreciate a good source for parts if anyone has anything to share. thankyou

Where are you located?? Fill out the profile.Fresh or salt water makes a difference on repairs.
The parts for this are all over the place.Just keep looking.
The water pump might just need an impeller. Not the whole kit.
This site or boats.net has tons of parts.Lot's of other sites too.
These motors run great. Not the best on gas but very dependable.J

Oh, PSHAW! You can get almost any part you need for those engines--you simply need to know where to look! They made so many of them and hardly changed the design for so many years that many parts are interchangeable from year to year. Sometimes you just need to be a little creative in your thinking.

Unless the water pump body is damaged or severely corroded, usually only a 25 buck impeller is needed.

Hey! You're into marine outboard engines now--everything starts at at least double what you think it should cost.

For parts, try franzmarine@aol.com.

Thanks for the info! I updated my profile.. I reside in rochester, ny. I was assuming since you need to mess with gaskets for a new impeller job I was supposed to install new gaskets. I did a water pump kit on my Mercury and I paid around $25 for everything.

Rochester---Very urbane town. My Brother-in-law used to work for Kodak (retired) and he and my sister used to live in Chili. They moved away a couple of years ago to Honeoye Falls. I used to see the fireworks display every Fourth. I lived in Yonkers and I remember when a flight from LaGuardia cost about 40 bucks.

Anyway, I believe the only gasket is below the stainless steel plate at the bottom of the pump. If it is in good condition it need not be replaced and even if it does need replacing, it is easy to make with a roll of gasket paper from the auto store and a scissors.

I grew up in Rochester, went to Brighton High, aweful weather and terrible people. Nice boating up in the canals into Canada, if you like fresh water boating. Took some nice trips up north, but will never go there again.
