Re: 1984 Mercruiser 470 3.7L 180hp-Help!

I was going to answer this 'piecemeal', but it all got too hard and I deleted it......

So, here's the deal.

Here's how the kit is supplied.

2 senders. One with 2 male bullet connectors (this is the limit switch) and they plug directly into the 2 female connectors on the trim pump harness.

The other sender (the gauge sender) has a male and a female connector. I think, (it's been a while since I installed one of these kits ) the kit also comes with a pair of 'adapters'. One is a female bullet to ring connector and the other is a male bullet to ring connector. Those adapters are for the wires you have.

That block with the brown/white wire is the block for these sender wire adapters. There should be 2 screws in that block. One goes all the way though and also holds the block to the bracket. (I think that's the screw currently holding the block to the bracket AND the wire to the block). Remove that screw and the brown/white wire from it and put the short adapter lead (from the kit) with the ring and the MALE bullet on the screw and screw it back on the block (and the block to the bracket). You are going to need to find another screw for the other hole. Then put the other adapter (ring terminal and FEMALE bullet) on that (new) screw with the brown/white wire and put it in the (currently) blank screw hole. You will now have the 2 connection points for the gauge sender....

I certainly hope that makes sense... (if it doesn't let me know and I'll rework it)

Chris.........
P.S. GREAT photo!

Blue/white wire and purple white wires off of pump get connected to the 2 wires from the Trim limit sensor, and it doesnt matter which ones connects to which from the sensor.

Correct....

Ok guys, great news. Got my kit in today, and put it all on. Works like a charm. I'm very pleased with how smooth the whole thing went. Adjusted everything and buttoned it all up. I have to say, I couldn't have done it without you guys. Especially thanks to achris and stonyloam! You guys will be my go to guys in the future for sure!

Now, the next chapter will be how do I winterize this dang thing! That wont be for about 2 more months since it's still sunny and 80 here for a while.

In the mean time, I'll be working on the cosmetics of the boat and making my girlfriend jealous (she said I spend more time working on the boat then with her!) Haha.

Here are 4-pages from the manual on winterizing the 470:

Very easy to do. Glad to see the guys got you going. ;)

OK one more time LOL: Freeze protection, super easy! Get yourself a cheap little antifreeze tester and check the engine antifreeze. It should about 50/50 automotive type antifreeze, adjust if necessary. Then the only other thing you have to do is pull the AFT plug on the underside of the heat exchanger and let the raw water drain. You might poke a little wire up in the hole to make sure it is clear and all of the water drains out. Your power steering cooler should be on the vertical hose going to the exhaust elbow, so it should drain just fine. I drain mine right on the launch ramp, pull the transom plug and exchanger plug and let er drain. If you get antifreeze out when you pull the plug you pulled the wrong one. That is it, you are done. Now it sounds like you are in a warm area so if you get a nice Christmas day and it is 75 out, just put the plug(s) back in and go boating, drain the exchanger when you are done. If it will only be 3 or 4 months in storage I wouldn't bother fogging, just crank it over a couple of times (don't start it) to keep the cylinder walls clean. If you are using ethanol gas, a can of stabilizer is a good idea. That being said I run only non-ethnol regular gas all the time. Find stations that carry it here: Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada . In the off season you will want to change the oil, pull the outdrive and lube the u-joints, gimbal bearing, driveshaft (where it goes into the coupler), all of the grease zerks, lube the propshaft, change the outdrive oil, and every other year change the impeller. Oh yeah buy yourself a decent battery maintainer (not a cheap trickle charger) and keep it hooked up all year long. Don't forget to retorque the gimbal ring clamping screws on the outdrive (55 ft lb) to keep them tight. That is all I can think of for now;)

And check the engine alignment whenever the drive is off... :D

Alright so boat ran great this weekend. Two things..

1) From idle to full throttle, sometimes it would pop and sputter and then kinda shake and die, or I would take it back to idle and slowly get it back to full throttle. Other times it would just go from idle to full throttle. Do you think the carb needs to be rebuilt? I cleaned it but that was the extent of that.

2) The rpm gauge doesnt work now. It did, now it doesnt?! Where does that all connect to?

Thanks guys.

Please "clarify what cleaned it means" in layman's terms....

thanks

The RPM gauge is connected to the Neg side of the coil. Either the wire has become disconnected or your gauge has gone bad, but most time if the gauge goes bag the engine will not start.

I didnt take it all apart, but did a good surface clean in and around the butterfly. Sparyed it down good until all the black was gone. I have never taken apart and rebuilt a carb like this one, only done small motor carbs. Any advice?

Thanks! I will check it out and let you know. It was working last weekend. Now it is not, and it was right above like 400 rpm and kept bobbing up and down then finally stopped. I will clean the connections and tighten and test.

Good morning,
I just rebuilt the same carb on my 3.7 190.
It was a little intimidating until I dug into it, then it became quite easy. Follow the manual step by step and you should have no problems. Lay out all the disassembled pieces in order as you take apart, clean them in the same order and re-assemble in reverse. Perform your adjustments and it's ready to go.:D
Good luck
