1985 50hp Force 507X5A water pump

I need to replace the water pump on this motor. There is some minor pitting on the inside of the housing. Do I need to replace the housing too? Where is a good place to get this? I can't find it in the iboats parts listing.

Also, can I replace the drive shafts seal and shift Rod seal without tearing the lower unit apeart?

That housing does not look to bad. I think you can reuse it.

Yes you can replace the seals without tearing the LU apart BUT the shift shaft seal will be a bit hard to change without pull the rod away.

DO NOT UNSCREW THE ROD. If you do it you have to tear the LU apart to get the rod back.
It is screwed in to a pivo at the fork holdning the york that do the clutch going back and forth (gear shifting).

I would suggest you to pressure test the LU first. If it is leaking then change the seals.
Or run the engine in water for some trips and the check the LU for water intrusion.

The housings a pot metal and can look pretty bad but still be usable.
​Yours looks fine.

​You have water in the lower, then do what Nordin suggested and pressure test.
​The original seals are called a crush washer and are used one time and then tossed.
Most re-use them and they can leak?? replace with a Mercury seal. 19183 2
It's real easy to screw up the soft metal around the seals and trying to remove them while the
shaft and rod is in place can be difficult.

The motors over 30 now.
The aluminum parts(bearing carrier) can be stuck and hard to remove.
​Another post in the last few days a member broke the screw flange when removing.

Thanks Nordin and Jerry! I have a complete seal kit ordered (from iboats). I do have water in the LU. Are you suggesting pressure test to identify the leak and only replace the shift seal if it leaks? Or should I just tare into it? I did have a lot of grease on top of the shift Rod area before I wiped it out. Also the shift Rod is very hard to move, is that normal?

I want to order the impeller from iboats but I don't see my motor listed, can you help?

If you are able to pressure test, do that.

Hard to move shift rod can be the seal has swell and it will cause you problem with the shifting.

If you are mechanically skilled, has the right tools then tear it down and reseal it.
BUT be very careful when removing the bearingcage.

Is a thread right now with a guy that broke one of the mounting bolt flang by removing it with wrong method and wrong tools.

The hard shifting, the area under/around the seal has corrosion and it swells the area around the seal and makes it hard to move.
It won't get any easier over time so you'll need to replace it.
Take your time.
