1985 6hp prop thrust washer

is the brass thrust washer thats located between the drive pin and the prop necessary? ( i just swapped lu's and the original prop is in better shape, but the drive pin will not go in with that prop intalled, and they are identical props, seems like the hub is in about 1/16 to far on the good prop?)

I also had this problem on the recent 85 6hp that I picked up. There was not enough room for the washer AND the shear pin. The previous owner had hammered the shear pin so it was a slight U shape.

What I found was that it appeared the rubber hub seemed to have corrosion between it & the inner part of the prop that the hub sits in. This corrosion forced the rubber hub rearward. Even under a hydraulic press could I force it back or out. So I just chucked the prop in my lathe & faced off the rear enough to accomodate both the washer and the shear pin.

this prop looks clean, and i did try giving it a few good whacks with a socket on both ends, but it didnt move. i might have o resort to more crude methods to get the bit of clearance it needs, but it does seem like its only for reverse, so maybe its not a big deal to omit it?
