Re: 1985 70hp Johnson Ignition Issue

I'm thinking of just clipping the black/yellow or black/green whatever it is - and just adding a N/O switch at the helm and/or at the back of the boat that will ground it out when pushed as a kill switch. Just eliminate the ignition switch alltogether. Who knows when this will happen again, or if it is even the problem.

The issue with that is that the ignition is always on and you could start the motor in gear inadvertently.

There is a separate safety switch that isolates the starter solenoid circuit in the remote control.

Re: 1985 70hp Johnson Ignition Issue

I don't have a solution, but it sure seems like there's an issue in either the kill switch or the ignition switch itself. Switching out the ignition switch is simple enough, but I'd wait until the problem repeated itself. This is why I dislike wiring issues; they can sometimes be a real bear to track down. I'm sure you've checked all of your wiring connects for corrosion, but it wouldn't hurt to suggest it anyway. I don't think you've mentioned it, but has it ever shut down on you while running or is this always a starting issue?

This ended up being a bad timer base assy. It would work one moment, but not the next.
