1985 85 force motor

I wonder if anyone could give me some advise here.
I have a 85 bayliner with a 85 force motor on it.

I take off slow for 3-4 minutes, then kick it all the way down and it goes fine.At least for the most part...as after it hits full,it seems to drop just a smidgeon, then pick up,then drop then pick up...Not alot, but noticeable.

Then when i decellerate to slow again,if i kick it down too quick,it boggs and floods.
If I wait the 3-4 minutes and hit full throttle,it is again fine for the most part.(like stated above)
Seems like it takes it a little while running slow to get it back on coarse to do a full throttle again.

Kinda strange.
decarbed,new plugs,baffle,exc.

I tried to road time it as i dont have a timming light, and not familiar on that area yet.
I tried setting the 3 carbs to 1 1/4 or more,then down to 3/4
i think it seemed not to even take off when it was at 3/4

The timming screw I cannot let out anymore,as it seems loose and not doing anything.Just floating there.
So I got it turned in to keep it tight and not move from vibration.
Turning in is advancing the timming right?

When i start it sometimes it pops like its flodded. You know, pop and not start. But I try it again, and it starts just fine.

Thats pretty much all I can say about the attitude it has..lol

Any advise would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Scotty
oh p.s.
I seem not to have any smooth running from slow to high.In other words, anything in between full throttle and putzing around it boggs.
So no middle throttle. But if i slowly decellerats,it sounds good..Going back down to slow that is.
But then again if i don't drive slow for 3-4 minutes,i cannot get full throttle again.

I had the same issue last year with my 1986 85hp. check for any loose wires on the terminal connectors on the right side of the motor I had a couple loose and it partially corrected my issue. I then replaced the original fuel pump and the motor ran perfectly.

Fuel pump hu?
Never thought about that.
Ya,will double check my wiring tomorrow just to make sure.

I know the guy i bought it from hit a rock or something as when i bought it,i had to replace the prop.
But he said it was fine, and that was the last time he had it out also.

If you messed with the timing at all you need to reset it.NO such thing as setting it by ear or touch or using the WAG method.(wild a*& guess)That adjustment bar shouldn't be touched.
The air screw is in then out 1 and 1/16 turn out and let it set.
Replace the fuel pump diaphram and any soft hoses.Check the tank vent for cloggs or bends.
After you reset the timing and do a compression test and check the pump.Take it for a ride and tell us how it ran.J

Ok I will go with 1 1/16.
Diaphram was replaced already,as hoses and all that i could do easily.

About the timming,if i messed with it,is there a way to reset it,or do i have to time it now?
Not sure how to time it.
i can turn it back in to about where it was at though.

Scotty

That's the WAG system. That will get you burned pistons and a new motor.Get a manual and set it to factory specs.
Use the search function and look up timing/Force and you will be supprised what you can find.Profile?? You might be close to someone who can help.J

Re: 1985 85 force motor

i will probably have to have a mechanic time it for me,but one question.

Is the timing under the flywheel?
What i adjusted was a nut,like a 1/4 inch,that has a threaded bolt to it,and a black plastic piece.

The only way i could get to it is to shut off the motor, put it at wot,so it comes out from under neath the fly wheel,so i could adjust it.

Yup that's the timing adjustement. It has a nut and on the end of the bolt a slot for a flat screwdriver to make adjustments. You could always do a quick check to see how off you are at 0 degrees TDC (therefore no timing light). First turn key off, then take out your top plug, and look through the plug hole with a flashlight and turn your flywheel by hand until you are confident it is at top dead center (closest to the plug hole), then look on the flywheel and see if your 0 degree mark (the mark that is all by itself to the right of the other lined marks) is lined up with the adjusting line under the flywheel. A timing light is of course your best bet to test your timing, especially at 28 degrees WOT, but I know a few guys who've succesfully timed their motors using this method. Now before you adjust your timing, don't forget to reset your idling screw (screw and nut located in middle of timing bar) back to about the middle position so that you have more give to make adjustments with it.

I personnaly would get a timing light (the one with the two clips to the battery and one clip to the top plug wire) and set the timing at 28 degrees WOT. Then adjust with idling screw to 750-800 rpm in forward gear at idle. Whenever I need one, I just borrow it from the local guy at the marine shop and bring it back with 10$ to thank him. Don't forget to ground your plugs if you take them out while cranking or you may fry your CDI's.

Re: 1985 85 force motor

Wow,thanks for the advise.
After a year of messing around with it,it now WOT,runs good slow, and i actually have throttle in between too.
So now i can go half speed which is something i haven't been able to do in quite some time :)
Thanks a million,
Scotty :)
