I have a 1987 bayliner capri with a metal tab coming up on the port side of the gas tank. there is a black ground wire coming up from it but it is cut off.. Does anyone know where it goes ?> Thanks
That is the ground for the fuel sending unit. Pink wire to the center of the sending unit is the 12v+ and the black wire from the tab (or sending unit retaining screw) is the 12v- ground.
so I should wire the black wire from the tab directly to the battery? also the motor works fine but the fuel guage doesn't work ... i don't know if that is what it goes to or not.. Thanks alot!

You can go directly from the battery, but a better option would be to find the 12v- bus bar or central grounding point for all of your other electrical devices and wire it to that. That way, you only have one main place to check if you have grounding issues in your boat. You can always run a temporary jumper wire from the negative post on the battery to the tab and verify that your gas gauge now works correctly, and then wire it properly after that.
