If you are going to replace the single VRO pump and do not want to replace it in kind- you will have to revert back to the dual (pre-mix) fuel pumps, last used in the 1983 model year. Check out the fuel pump system diagram for a 1983 V6 from the factory website: epc.brp.com. The second pump will require a pulse port to drive it. Your block currently only has one. There is a second port on your block, which currently should have a plug screwed into it. Remove the plug and install another hose barb in order to create second pulse hose port for your second fuel pump. These dual pre-mix pumps were used up to the 240 hp 2.6 V6's with no problem.

I don't know why some people want to replace the vro pump with a premix type. I have an Evinrude 150 hp also and it still had the original pump on it and it was still working fine. Only problem is when I pumped fuel into the carbs I noticed it had a leak around the seam. So I bought a new one, VRO, and a new oil tank and she runs great. What it good about the VRO is just as it states, variable rate oiler, so you use the correct amount of oil at a specific rpm.

Guess I have just heard bad things about them quitting alot and your rebuilding a motor. Maybe I need to research this matter a little further.

The original (early) pumps were VRO types. Newer replacement fuel/oil mixing pumps all mix constantly at the 50 to 1 ratio. While expensive, they are very reliable.

They are expensive but I found a new one on eBay for a good price, well at least I thought it was a very good price. I haven't read anywhere that they mix at 50:1 all the time. I thought they were all variable oilers?

Been doing alot of thinking about this matter. And my line of thinking keeps reverting back to removing the vro . My reasoning is it's just something else to go wrong and when you mix the oil and gas if it's running you know it's getting oil. Plus it will cost alot to redo the oiling system and I just can't see spending that kind of money on a older motor.

Well ok. I know the pumps are not cheap, I got my on eBay for $320 with all the hoses and fittings etc. to connect it, including shipping. I've seen it on other web sites for $450. I guess if you are going to premix you can just plug off the oil side and keep your pump. Don't take my word on that, do your research. Let us know how your project goes.

I appreciate any and all input on this matter. I have decided not to rush to power up my tritoon I'll keep running my crank rated 115 Johnson this season while going through the 150 cleaning carbs, new, water pump, replace fuel lines, install fuel pumps, thermostats, and so on

Finally getting around to getting this motor ready for my 1983 ercoa tri toon. I have decided to mix the oil and gas and block of the oil side of the pump just using the fuel side because of people telling me id have to drill port for second pump using duel fuel pumps like pre vro . So I decided tonight to pull pump and inspect and after removal and looking at block it's already got a second port and barb that's caped off with a rubber cap so now to figure which way is the best to go and start ordering parts.
