I am working on an evinrude 8 hp. It has spark on both cyls, but does not start. It seems to backfire hard every 10 or so pulls. Is this most likely carb or could I have hooked the electrical up wrong? I am getting solid spark on both cyls.

Thanks

Which plug wires? The spark plug wires or the coil wires?

switch at the plugs. just to make sure the backfiring isnt due to reversed plug wires.

Check if the plugs are both sparking at the same time. If so, change the powerpack.

The top plug wire goes from the top plug to the top coil and the bottom plug wire goes from the bottom plug to the bottom coil. I checked the spark timing as was suggested and the plugs are firing opposite of each other. I am going to try new plugs today.

Have you checked the flywheel key? You may have spark at the wrong time. If access to a timing light, do a test or lift off the flywheel and check the key.

I have never used a timing light and dont think I have one. What should I be looking for?

You should be looking for spark close to TDC at idle. But if no light available, lift off the flywheel. (You need a flywheel puller!)
