so i have a 1985 125 hp force outboard 2 stroke, dual carb. on a 19ft bayliner capri br

ive been going out everyday and for the last 2 weeks its been running great no problems but yesterday after a solid 5 hours of being out sometimes idling sometimes cruising half throttle and sometimes top speed. i went to pull into my slip when the outboard cut out and i had to take the carb bowls off empty them back into the tank and then pump the ball and chock it to get it started again.

also a few days ago i didnt think much of it but i was running at top speed and it seemed to be slowing down so i pumped the black fuel ball a few times and it went right back to running at top speed

after playing around with it it seems to cut out mostly* when coming down from WOT but sometimes itll cut out randomly at idle or with a small load

both carb have been cleaned and are working properly(to my knowledge)
all spark plugs look fine although there is a black oily fluid on the treads that i have no idea what it is

im thinking maybe a bad ground somewhere although i couldnt find one
maybe its starving itself of fuel but why?

this is my first boat and i had it running so good for the last two weeks i was so happy and now this is happening and i fear i wont be able to enjoy the rest of the season so if anyone has any input or suggestion it would be greatly appreciated

You have my boat or is it visa versa? Electrical, Clean the plugs, (probably it). Fuel system, Check the fuel pump diaphram.

Re: 1985 force 125hp cuts out and dies

quick update i played with the carb adjustment and it seems to be running smooth and hasnt cut out on me since.

but i still have the problem of its hard to start. i know its a old motor and all but the only way to guarantee start it is too pump the ball till its solid then choke it (it will always almost start but wont) so i then just crank it without choke and after 10-15 seconds of continuous cranking it will start and run smooth.

this process is the only way to get it to turn over every time without me having to do anything "under the hood"

so my best guess is that its either a firing problem or a thermostat problem (the engine always thinks its cold thats why it needs the choke everytime?)

it also smokes white smoke from the exhaust kinda like a car when you start it on a cold morning but not to bad were its a problem

The throttle should be in fast idle. On mine the choke is only used for the first/cold start. My smoke problem was cleared up by cleaning the fuel recirculation system.
