I picked up a 1985 bayliner cheap it had so problems. 1. It had a bad ignition switch I replaced it. After put a new battery in it I got it to run but top cylinder was not firing so i read some post on here an replsced the stator, point, condensors and rectifer I did a compression test an got 120 on both. So I put every thing back together an it still run like **** I have to jack the throttle back an forth to keep it running. And the fywheel key is in place. It has new fuel line and fresh gas 50:1 mix. What wrong?

Okay I took the flywheel off again And I didn't have my point set correct. The motor runs okay I think I got to do some carb adjustments. But the problem I'm seeing now i got a thick grayish of liquid dripping out of the bolt on my lower unit. What could that be

The setting on the carb: 1 turn out from lightly seated. That is the inital setting.

The oil? It could be unburned gas/oil leaked from the carb.
Check the lower unit oil for water.
To check the lower unit, there is a slotted screw on the side of the lower unit,DON"T touch.
This is a linkage screw and it will be a bummer if it's removed.
The lower will need to be taken apart to fix.
The drain is on the bottom and the vent is on the top of the lower unit.

No water in the oil: means that it's unburned gas/oil comming from the carb and filtering it's way through the motor and leaking out the easiest point. When I find a motor doing that,I use the Purple cleaner from Auto Zone or the Green stuff and a carb cleaner.
I spray and soak the lower cowl area and use my pressure washer to clean it up.
I hate dripping oil at the boat ramp.

Re: 1985 force 50 hp idle problems

Okay I took the boat out today put it in the water backed it off the trailer She started up fine I don't really good. To golf around the lake and I could only get like 20 Mile an hour Come to find out my throttle linkage and everything was all screwed up So I'll bought new parts today. Going to test it tomorrow But my big scare today was When I took the lower unit apart to check all the seals and change the water and impeller I didn't put forward and reverse gear in the right spot. It was great in forward gear but when I try to stop go to neutral nothing happened stayed in gear freak me out. So my question is how do you find forward neutral and reverse the right way

Motor off, unhook the shift and throttle linkage.
Shift the motor by hand, turning the prop with your foot as you shift.
F N R Then shift again and find N
Then at the shifter, shift FNR and then find N.
Adjust the cables to match.
The throttle cable will need a tiny bit of tension when installed.

Re: 1985 force 50 hp idle problems

Okay I still have idle issues I took the boat out today It started up great but idled a little low. I still have problems with reverse gear After messing with the shift linkage I got forward really good and neutral really good Reverse is still a little off. But my problem today was Is when I got on the throttle It planed out great And then after about 30 seconds The engine just powered down To a very low idle. So I got home I checked the fuel diaphragm And this is what I found A gasket new diaphragm Overtop of the old diaphragm. I ordered a new fuel pump kit it should be here Friday. So what do I do about my shifting problem And my power loss
