1985 Force 85 hp ran without oil in the gas

My parents just gave me a boat with an 1985 Force 85 hp motor. With little instruction and no owner's manual, I took it out to figure out how everything works. The motor has very low hours on it and has been serviced regularly. It ran with no trouble my first time out which was only for about an hour. I later learned that I made two mistakes.

First, I didn't know that I was supposed to mix oil with the gas. I now know to use a 50 to 1 mix. My second mistake was not to open up the air valve on the gas tank to prevent a vacuum. The motor ran fine despite my mistakes, and I was only out long enough to burn about 3 gallons of gas.

I tried taking it out again yesterday, this time with the proper gas/oil mix, and with the air valve open, but this time it wouldn't turn over. It has a new battery and is cranking good, and it occasionally sounded like it was going to turn over, but it never did. I tried putting a little gas into the spark plug holes, but this didn't help either.

Any advice as to what I should try next, or how much damage I may have caused would be greatly appreciated.

How do I check the compression? Would running without oil in the gas as I described cause a compression problem? I am thinking that it had good compression when I took it out the first time because it started and ran without any trouble.

Running with NO oil will cause all kinds of problems with your engine. From low to NO compression to failed Brg's. OR other damage.

Find a compression tester..or buy one...then test the compression.

You could have lost compression by running with No oil in the gas.

TMD

You can buy a compression tester from sears for 25 bucks. Pull a plug and crank the motor a couple of times and write down reading. Re insert plug and pull next plug and do same test. Compression should be over 100 and within 10 points of each other

Checking compression is pretty easy. You just take out all the spark plugs and screw your tester in place of one of them and then crank the motor. Do this on each cylinder and record the numbers.

Hate to say it, but needs to be said. Running a motor with oil in the gas is about the worst thing I can imagine doing to it. This is just like running a car without any oil at all, and I'm surprised you were able to burn even 3 gallons without problems. From what I know of Force's they have a tendency to form cracks in the block which basically means the powerhead is ruined, and this will happen even on properly maintained motors. Cross your fingers and hope that isn't your problem.

Good luck.

I think he means running a motor WITHOUT oil in the gas is the worse thing you can do.

I guess it's my lucky day. I got a compression tester and hooked it up with the following results:

1 - 120
2 - 120
3 - 130

The best thing is that it actually started when I tested 2 and 3, and it ran perfectly when I hooked up all three. Looks like I may have dodged a bullet on this one. Maybe it just needed to get some gas in the line after it ran with the air valve closed. I'll keep my fingers crossed and try it again this weekend.

Thanks for the help.

For future reference, remove all the plugs when doing a compression test. If the motor fired and ran, it was firing on less than it's full complement of cylinders. I would recommend a manual -- one with a section on general outboard operation and basic maintenance would be good.

Wow, you really did get lucky! Hopefully you'll have no major problems from here on out. Must have been some residual feul/oil mix in the tank to have spared you some real damage.

Oops! Thanks for pointing that out about taking out all of the plugs. I missed that, but it is right there in jrlogan's post. I have learned a lot about the boat in the last couple of weeks thanks to this forum. I did buy a repair manual also. I took the boat out thursday, and after some initial difficulty getting it started, I cleaned the plugs off and then it started and ran fine. I ran it for a couple of hours and burnt about 10 gallons of gas with the proper oil mix. Thanks again to everyone for all of the help.
