1985 force 85 will not go fast anymore :(

I just bought it. took it to the sea. ran for 5min full throttle. then died.
started up again. but now it would not go fast at all. I mean I barely made it back.

It sound got but the second I try to go fast it dies, if it was a car, it feels like not enough fuel. I would like as detailed information as possible

I did some research and found that if it was running lean (from a fault in the fuel system), it could over heat and destroy the piston. ( but I made it back) well I will do a compression check tomorrow. what is the psi on these engine???

also it could be a water pump problem (is that the same thing as an impeller?).

I don't think its a water pump/impeller problem, I am personally leaning towards fuel pump or fuel filter.

I am a car mechanic for 9 years now. I am just getting in to outboard motors.

No actual specs on the compression.Way too much variation in different guages.
All 3 should be about the same.
After you check the compression/spark check the fuel pump diaphram.Then replace any hoses and inline connectors(just remove the connectors)
Check the vent line.
Use the search function for fuel problems.J
