1985 Johnson impeller replacement

I am working on my 35 hp johnson. I want to replace the impeller. I have taken out the bolts on the lower unit, but it still won't come off. My question is how do I disconnect the shifting rod on a johnson. It is still connected when I pull up on the lower unit the shifting lever moves back and forth.

if not mistaken, it is connected under the carb, starboard side.
