Day three of rebuild:

I have this on a picasa web album. I have a broadside pic of the boat to separate days to make it easier to look at, and figure out what I've done.

I used this SCARY THING to remove the wood that had not rotten

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fX3aPS2CA7xwkQEp3o_dZ6HCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

It removed to much material so fast, it made my head spin. I had that transom ready for sanding in 20 minutes!

I shortened the stringers...

https://picasaweb.google.com/gillyn...Wy3fLupgE&feat=directlink#5878315851490415378

and ground down the area in front of the original engine bay to make room for the new (longer) engine:

That's about all I got done today. I'm pretty tired because my daughter gave me her cold. She's so generous.

I purchased all the lumber I'm going to need (I think) along with epoxy rollers, quart mixing containers, and other miscellaneous stuff. Fiberglass is coming, and this week I will head to my local West Marine to pick up a few gallons of polyester resin. If I can get some sleep and get over this dang cold, I could make more progress. I need a nap.

That Lancelot thing looks pretty nifty. I would have liked one of those for tearing out my transom.

I'll admit, it's a fascinating tool, and really effective. Just real easy to go to far.

Update: I'm very excited, I cut my transom pieces today. I made a template out of 3/8 ply, and cut two pieces out of 3/4, they'll fit perfectly. I'll laminate then tomorrow with some thickened resin, and then screwed together. I'll pull the screws out and fill in before I cover with CSM. Then its time to install. I didn't take pics because 2 pieces of plywood probably isn't interesting to anyone but me :)

Started laying up transom today. 2 layers of premium 3/4 ply with a layer of 1/2 sheathing grade in between.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QsO5-8NTjDIVYX842MD-jKHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

screws in there to clamp it all together.

I don't care that the edges are overlapping a bit; I'm going to put a bevel on it and clean it up.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QfJE3Gr_4a9M5JF0XKS0xaHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

ready to cover it with csm as soon as it's ready and install it!

I can't view any of your pics, strange. Seems like others can but not sure why I can't.

Thank you JASin! I read your whole thread, nice work yourself :)

I installed the transom today.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6wuGorz8Po2frlXOn6enpKHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

I used a backing place, like you did JASin but I didn't use the 2x4 method I just screwed it right through.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iYwDPHepDeU51j_obTzFLaHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

I even made extra holes to allow air in and epoxy to seep out. Hopefully to show I have enough in there.

which seemed to be a good thing

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6PX4XFarnUxH-A1r4DDy1KHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

I cut my stringers back a bit more to give myself some more room to work. That turned out to be a good thing

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/nxf18WAcQazdZMQd3by1mqHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/dxer3kL_5GKn39FqQPUx9aHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

I meant to cut a bugger hole for the bilge drain, ala Frisco Jay, but I'll have to do that later.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/dzztAf3La8Atk647-2R8uKHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

So far so good. That was the hardest part. So far.

No documentation would be complete without a little youtube.

Got a start on my engine mounts today too. The old mounts were just about 9" by 9" blocks. The new ones; I'm using a one-piece beam for each side, 6" longer to accommodate for the longer engine, and using the same method as the original to accommodate for the 20 degree (ish) hull. Once the level is right and it's stable and secure, I'll fill in underneath for the whole length, assuming I can, and glass it to the stringers. I need to finish the transom before I can make the mounts final.

As promised, on to some destructive evaluation of the glue and materials in the transom. I shuddered at the possible failures I would find... Take a deep breath, here we go:

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/LCleRL5lB3BOFDKvT8TwhqHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

A piece left over from the beveling.

https://picasaweb.google.com/gillyn...Wy3fLupgE&feat=directlink#5880968554476859106

Just cut into a few pieces for testing.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/13QMmPl-BTGh_sMzMl8ezaHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

Clamped to the edge of a bench... (gulp)

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/vMJ2iOruh49Z7omFLNwufaHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

First strike with a hammer just glanced off. I might not have squared myself with the piece.

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/9UnkH58VJ2eWfpwfzglmM6HCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

I got a solid hit this time. It broke. But the wood broke before the glue did!

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ugKjxpBGGyu3ekKuYK7ty6HCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

As far as I'm concerned: 1) the transom is going to be fine as far as the laminating goes, and 2) that is some GOOD GLUE!

Heres a question for the group: I could cut the mounts from the red line on back and save probably 30 lbs of weight. I guess I was still in my OMC frame of mind. Do you think all that wood is unnessessary? I'm adding 25 horsepower not 500. I think it can go but I'm not an engineer.

Also for the Merc gurus out there, how critical is the thickness of the transom? I know it has be the same within a close tolerance and the book says up to 2.25 inches thick. According to my calculations, I'm going to be in the 2.35 range by the time I'm done adding my 2 layers of 1708. I could grind the top layer of the transom off too. The book says that tolerance is only for 8" around the keyhole suggesting that beyond that, it doesn't really matter. Looking at my donor vessel, I can believe that. I just didn't get a good enough squeeze with the PL. what do you think?

Re: 1985 Seaswirl Tempo 17 floor replacement turning into something bigger.

It is called flatness and parallelism.....
The transom MUST be in factory specs.....You should shoot for 2 inches....I believe the manual calls for 2 and 1/8? Please check the Merc factory manual. There are tolerances with the amount of thread on the studs of the outer plate, but you cannot be too thick or the studs will not be long enough to go through the transom. You will have steering arm issues.
The keyhole must be exactly the same all the way around or your transom will leak. (this is called parallelism)
it must be perfectly flat on both sides.....and it also must be of the exact thickness all the way around the hole.

What's your layup schedule gunna be for the Motor mounts? I'd recommend putting em back the way you found em, and using a minimum of 4 layers of CSM and 1708.

Re: 1985 Seaswirl Tempo 17 floor replacement turning into something bigger.

I would not mess with transom thickness. I've read too many threads where folks had transoms of the wrong thickness or that weren't uniform in thickness and it causes nothing but headaches. I'd get the transom within specs now, rather than find you have to pull the outdrive, transom shield and engine later on.

As for the motor mounts, personally, I wouldn't be comfortable changing the boat from how it was designed, unless I was beefing things up or over-engineering them. Removing material to save weight (which may or may not make any performance difference) wouldn't be worth the risk of some future problem. I may be conservative in that respect, but why take a chance?

Re: 1985 Seaswirl Tempo 17 floor replacement turning into something bigger.

Ok, I'll shave some off the inside of the transom to keep it under 2.25 inches. UGH. Didn't want to do that but oh well :)

The engine mounts can't be the same as they were because I had a 140hp 4 cylinder in there and I'm putting in a 165 hp 6 cylinder, which is 6" longer. Also since I had an OMC in there, and am changing to a Merc, the rear mounts aren't used anymore. That's kind of a detail but there you have it. The mounts were just 9" x 9" blocks (4 of em) glassed to the stringers. I was going to use that big ol beam; one on each side in place of the smaller blocks, but now I'm thinking that might be overkill. I'm only adding 25 more hoursepower and about 80 lbs more weight (as far as the engine is concerned), so I just don't think my beam construction needs to be that beefy. The way the front of the engine is sitting on a threaded rod, it doesn't look like a lot of stress is transferred there anyway. Thanks for your thoughts; keep em coming!

I'll be filling in the old OMC hole pretty soon. If I don't use peel ply, can I use a filler like Bondo to finish out the surface, once the hole is filled in?

The OMC hole is almost done

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/G5mXb81UsvEHWbF8R_HxkqHCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

I think it looks ok

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/P5FCGONzeMrXB6m26fl0H6HCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/GyiGky_EinSxdpF9IlcMT6HCuTx9N85ff0vacwuIzpg?feat=directlink

I used the backing board from the transom install to clamp up the hole. I layered in 20(ish) layers of CSM, enough so that the "plug" ended up slightly proud of the stern of the boat. Then clamped it with the board, screwed right to the transom. The plastic was just pulled tight, taped to the board, and used like peel ply would be. the final result is pretty smooth and flat, requiring minimal sanding. Some filling will be necessary; not alot.

It's close
