Thanks and offer declined. I've only owned her a month and a half now, and you're the second person who's made an offer. Perhaps I should rename her "Not For Sale".

Thanks, Wood! I will set my export settings in Lightroom to that.

Nice boat. Those stringers do not look too bad.

Re: 1985 Wellcraft 210 Elite Restoration

Thanks Frisco. The stringers are solid. Only one bulkhead is rotten (no weep holes.) I got very lucky. I'm thinking that I should lift the tank. There's a PVC pipe that runs between the rotten bulkhead and the one fore of the gas tank, which is cracked to smithereens. I'm assuming that it runs beneath the tank. Doesn't seem reasonable to me to begin reassembly without lifting the tank to check for damage. Thoughts?

Yep, it looks like you were one of the lucky ones. I would for sure lift the tank, but that is just me.

Discovered some rot in the stringers today. Now to core sample everything. Why in the heck Wellcraft skipped glassing over portions of the stringers, I'll never know, but I'm quite annoyed.

Didn't even need to drill holes to core sample. Ugh! More than half of the stringers are rotten. Found lots of spots where the stingers weren't fully glassed over and none of the weep holes were sealed. Time to figure out how I'm going to pull the motor out.iboats-4386.jpgiboats-4387.jpgiboats-4388.jpgiboats-4389.jpgiboats-4390.jpg

The lack of caring craftsmanship is part of it...

... but had the boat been properly maintained and protected from the elements...

Your boat is such a sexy thing, I don't think you'll stay mad at her for very long.;)

Thank you. I've been in love with this boat since I first set eyes on her 25 years ago. She'll be better than new when I'm done repairing her.

Re: 1985 Wellcraft 210 Elite Restoration

To tell you the truth mt7, Wellcraft actually did a darn good job on those stringers and bulkheads. Note the radiused edge on the tops of them and how the glass is laid up nice and tight, you don't see that from the factory on these other boats. The stringer and bulkhead tops are square and the glass cloth is just draped over everything with huge voids between the glass and wood and it looks like absolute refried rat crap.

Really and truly I have to say that exposure is what did your boat in. They could've done a little more thorough job glassing your deck support in... but you got a Rolls Royce job compared to the others I've seen on here.

Not sure where you plan on getting your wood but I just bought all my wood up there at Capitol City lumber last week. I paid 42$ a sheet for 3/4" acx and 32$ a sheet for the 1/2". They also carry marine grade but it was I wanna say something like 120$ a sheet. Customer service is lacking and they frown upon looking through half the stack to find the best looking pieces, but at the end of the day I was pretty pleased with what I got.

Cool. Capitol City Lumber is exactly where I was planning to get my wood. They're only a few miles from me.

They can frown all they want and I can suggest a few other things they can do when I'm picking through $120 sheets of plywood to find the best ones if they don't want to help.

mrthunder - where are you located? I'm in Apex and picked up a 1995 Chris Craft 197 to tear into this Winter. I'd love to see what you're getting into. I've lurked here for 8 months and finally got the bug to do it from Frisco's videos.

I'm up near Peace College in downtown Raleigh. I'll PM you my address. I'm planning to pull the outdrive off this afternoon and begin preparing to pull the motor.

Re: 1985 Wellcraft 210 Elite Restoration

Your hull design seems very similar to my 88 wellcraft 210 classic. FYI-from the factory - It had poplar stringers glassed about 3/4 of the way up and pour foam under the deck every where. The rear stringers were hardwood -- (Looked like ash ). A plywood seam held together with corrogated fasteners was a big weakness as it was letting water into the seam as it ran to the stern and was hidden under the carpet. The plywood was glassed on top but had no cloth. That evenually led to rot. Can't complain too much as thats how I ended up aquiring it.

Just thought you might find the comparison of interest. Good luck with your restoration.

Re: 1985 Wellcraft 210 Elite Restoration

Yep, your `88 and my `85 hull came out of the same molds, quite possibly the same mold. It is indeed interesting to learn about the difference in the stringer system over the course of a few years. Mine were made of spruce. No floatation foam was used in my hull, with the exception of the small amount used around the top corners of the fuel tank. My deck was secured to the stringers with mild steel nails. The deck had a single layer of CSM on portions of it, but several portions had no mat.

I too cannot complain, my dad sold the boat to me for a dollar and I'm perfectly fine with dealing with the itch while restoring her. There are very few new boats on the market that are comparable to ours (exception being the Stingray 225SX - such a gorgeous boat) and when I looked at what I could get used in good working order for the money I'm projecting to put into this project, I primarily found entry-level, 18' bow-riders.

Unfortunately, I got very little done on the project today. I needed to buy some tools to move forward (one of the great benefits of this project), but my wife had a very long practice this morning and we share one car (truck). It was about 3pm when she got home and I could head out to make my rounds to Harbor Freight, Home Depot, and Advance Auto to get what I needed, and by the time I got home there wasn't much daylight left. It didn't help that I spent 10 minutes shopping at Harbor Freight and 30 minutes waiting in line to check out...

If it sounds like I'm complaining, I apologize, that is not my intention, I'm very much enjoying this project and will love getting to enjoy this boat for another 25+ years.

Also interesting that Wellcraft lists your hull weight at 2990 lbs. and mine 3100 lbs. *edit* scratch that - I misread it, 2990 lbs. and 3000 lbs., both with the V8.
