I have a 1986 115eltj. I took the boat for the madien voyage today and it ran ok in idle all the way out to the no wake end. Then i upped it to 2k rpm it ran ok there too. As i started to give it more at about 3k it seemed to bog down. I reached over and pumped the fuel primer ball and it picked right up. I can run it pretty well as long as i pump the ball every once and a whyle. And by that i mean like 2 times per muinite. It dosent seem like the ball is that soft when i pump it but not sure. I had a 15 hp motor that the ball would get so soft that it would suck in but it ran all day like that. Now, here is how i have the fuel system hooked up: There is a 6 gallon tank under the bow-then there is the yamaha male tank fitting-then on the line is the female yamaha fitting on the fuel line at the tank-then about 1 foot of fuel line like the stuff you get at walmart with the primer ball on it-then the primer ball-after the primer ball there is about 3 feet of walmart fuel line then a fram automotive fuel filter inline that connects the grey fuel line with black fuel line that runs to the back of the boat and connects to the motor with another yamaha female fuel fitting. Where the fitting connects to the motor it feels a little loose like there is some side to side motion to it. Its the same at the gas tank. I can move it a little bit when its connected and im not sure if air is getting in there. They are all new fittings just seem like they are loose when connected. Also im not sure if that black fuel line is causing the problem eather its a little thicker than the other fuel line and it is softer than the grey stuff from wallyworld. Also there is the factory crimped clamps on the primer ball that i dont trust verry well. I prefer the screw type hose clamps. Man the motor runs soo cherry though when its going i have until thursday to figure this thing out. I been working on this boat til midnight all summer trying to have it ready for a camping trip we are leaving for on thursday. Any help would be Huge for me!!!!!! Thanks guys!!

Re: 1986 115 bogging out

has old gas been sitting in the carbs all winter?
floats, needle valve, or main jets may be gummed up.

Re: 1986 115 bogging out

is that what i should suspect? The engine will run ok until it seems to loose its prime. Then i squeese it and it picks right up. I dont know where to start on this one. the motor is new to me this season. Previous owner had it on a pallet. When i got it i turned it uprite and it fired up with no problem and idles verry nicely. I cant get it to do the problem on the hose or in a big barrel. So im thinking i will try to clean what i can of the carbs and move the gas tank to the back where i can make the fuel line shorter with no splices in it and no inline fram filter connecting 2 gaslines. Its kinda BS that i used a fuel filter to connect 2 lines. Thanks i just dont know where to start.

Back off the 2 bolts holding the fuel pump to the block. Squeeze the primer bulb. If fuel shoots out the back of the fuel pump, replace the pump. Your problem will disappear.

i guess i would go down the road you're headed.
secure all fittings and hoses.
check for leaks cracks, obstructions etc.
dump the old gas
clean/replace fuel filters and water separator.
no water in the gas, right?

fuel pump leak check (from Grid, above) makes sense
ultimately, the overall check would be to confirm the fuel pump has sufficient pressure and/or vacuum with a gage T'd into the fuel ine.

after that there's not much left besides the carburators.
you could remove the drain plugs ( 2 for each carb) and check for gunk.

if suspect, you can carefully dismantle, clean and reassemble the carbs with original seals , but a rebuild kit it a good idea.
stuff like gumout cleaner so good it will disolve all rubber parts as well as the varnish :( (separate them, if they may be used again, even as a temp fix)

good luck.

Hey grid what 2 bolts holding the pump to the block? I see where i think the fuel pump is but there is 4 bolts there. And where should the fuel come out of?

The two center bolts are the mounting bolts. fuel will leak out the rear of the pump if the diaphram is bad.

Re: 1986 115 bogging out

Ok I got it fixed. All i did was buy a new uneversal fuel line and primer bulb combo from wal-mart its only about 4 feet long but has the primer ball with it. I attached the fittings on both sides of that and set the tank on the floor and it ran fine out in the bay through the whole 6 gallons i didnt have to touch the primer ball. So im thinking that the line might have been too long or the primer ball could not keep the fatter fuel line that i had before primed. But eather way its working now i just have to keep the tank in the back of the boat until i get the correct fuel line. Which is great because im camping on the chesipeke bay all next week and i cant wait. Just glad i dont have to rebuild another fuel pump and carbs!! Thanks for all your help guys!!
