it's 20 something gallon tank was put in in fl. still has all the tags on it. i plan on putting it back, but will try to get a little lower(giving me alittle more storage space, which is lacking on the center console). the PO told me it didn't work, motor would not pull the fuel that far???? the boat came with a 6 gallon plastic tank under the splash well, my buddy gave me a 15 gal. that fits there great. i added a electric fuel pump to fill the 15 gal from the front tank. all together i will have about 40 gals.

i have to go out of town this week for business meeting(orlando) so not much going to happen soon

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i went fishing 2-day with oldest son and the marina next to the bait shop had a qt of marine tex tagged for $60.00 the harder had some black ozz on it, they said they didn't want to sell it to me. i asked if we opened it up what would they take for it !!! she said 1/2 ... the harder was fine looked like something dripped on the top... end results 60 bucks of product for 30 bucks.

ps sprayed the hull with some russco(?) metal prep it said it phosphate (?) the metal... looked good!!! ecthed for prime but cleaned up nice.
i plan to take if off the trailer and level and gluvit then prime the hull(inside)
then flip and prep hull and paint outside. been cold here in the 50's sounds warm... but when working outside might as well be 30

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i'm trying to think ahead, i'm having a hard time finding extruded polystyrene for the floation. seems the big box stores stopped carrying it several yrs back.
but i'm always asked how much do you need????????????
don't know how many 4x8 sheets 2 inch thick has any one else used in their boats.i might have to go with the reg expanded poly which is availble at HD 12.00 and board 4x8x2
marina's all req the 2 part stuff

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i would like to put a new skin of alum. on the outside of the transom.
i plan on using closed end rivets where i can and some stainless bolts on the sides where the wood gets bolted on, with some extra in the field.
i plan on prep-ing the surface by wire wheeling and a mild acid wash to etch, acetone rinse, 5200 spread on with a notched trowel.
this would be on just the back of the boat not to interfere with orginal rivets on the sides.
i'm thinking 3/32 looks like the orginal metal thickness.
any input would be great

happy new years

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

Hey Joe,
Any updates on the aluminum for the transom? I am using some old business signs I had hangin around. I am using them on the Inside of the transom, attached with gluvit and some rivets. The outside I am thinking on a Diamond Plate cut to match the outside transom shape. That should help in support but aesthetically I think it will look bad a** with the black paint job.

PaulyV

i too am using some signs for repairs(got mine from a friend at the county) they use to read boat trailer parking only!!(lol). i stripped off all the lettering and reflective material and cut to size. i plan on using 5200 and closed end rivets.
the transom skin was fiberglassed over by the PO. since i'm this deep i decided to remove it. there are a couple of holes in it. i plan(and have priced out) a peice of 1/8 inch alum 4x8 sheet and plan on making another skin to go on the outside. we will wire wheel and clean up the old skin and place the new one over it.
we plan to cut out the 3 holes for the plug, live well intake and drain. i am going to spread 5200 with a notched trowel and closed end rivet where i can, utilize any orginal bolts hole through the transom and possibly add a few new ones(stainles steel)
i also am thinking about cutting the pcs. about a 1/4 inch larger and peening it over the sides and maybe welding it, this way it will not interfere with the orginal rivets which seem to be ok.

1/8 seems to be alittle heavier than the stock

the weather here has been unreal! 10 days below freezing 2 days below 20

Re: 1986 21 ft starcraft cc restore

i believe 2 things did my hull in to the mess we found
1- poured foam too tight of a fit and stopped water from flowing back
2- and this is only a guess... i read there really is no such thing as salt water corrosion, but actually electrolosis(sic), caused by salt water and some kind of electric problem like a ground direct to the hull. in my case i found not such ground but have read that it could also be caused by the battery being connected and the boat being wet docked, since the motor is grounded and then in water.

my photos look bad but the hull as cleaned up nicely and i feel comfortable with the restore. i have some good friends to call on if needed but mainly this is a family thing.
