1986 28hp Johnson - De-corrosion product & Water flow question

I am looking for a de-corrosion product and any advice on how to use it. The inside of my engine housing has corrosion, and I would like to clean it before I reassemble my engine.

I also would like any insight on something I observed when I took off the cylinder head.

Here is what happened. I was having cooling problems (overheating, no water out of tell tale) and replaced the impeller and am replacing the thermostat and gasket. I noticed when I took the thermostat out that the hole where the water shoots in from the engine is partially blocked with a rubber looking piece. I thought maybe a piece of rubber had gotten up into the cooling system and stuck to the block wall near the hole, but I was wrong. When I removed the cylinder head to see what was behind it, there actually is a hard rubber plug/spacer in that part of the engine. It looks like it is where it is supposed to be, but it still blocks part of that hole. i don't know what to do. Maybe it was engineered that way, but it does not look right. I would appreciate any guidance.

I tried to attach a photo.

Thanks.

Photos would help.?
It might be a rubber water deflector.

I have added a photo, thanks. If it is a water deflector, you think I can slide it over a bit without messing it up? Assuming it will move.

Don't even think about sliding it over. This mtr has three deflectors in it and you should be able to see them with the head off. What you should do is replace all of them while the head is off. What they do is direct water in your block to go through the proper channels so your mtr won't over heat. The one on the pic you posted really looks bad. Go to Shop.Evinrude.com, bring up your year and model and look at parts break down of the block.

Thanks much Boobie. I will check out this site and see what I can find. If you have undertaken this repair before, I would appreciate any advice. I am thinking that the reason it is blocking the flow hole is because it is just old and may have shifted or swollen a bit.

Normally what they do is swell up and start blocking water off. What you have to do is pull the old ones out, get a small brush and clean up the area where the new ones go in. I have a battery terminal cleaner in my tool box bent at a 90 degree angle just for doing this. Make sure you get them in the right position when installing and also lube them. If you look closely at the the block you'll see little tabs that hold them in. Hope this helps.

That is what I will do. I am a bit concerned about taking out the two at the bottom, as they are going to be hard to get to. Any trick to taking them out? Also, when you say "lube," can I just use grease?

Thanks again.

I also have a pair needle nose pliers bent at a 90 degree angle that I've used to get the old ones out. Also some weird bent picks are handy. The trick is getting everything good and clean before installing the new ones. Pay attention when removing them as there two long and one short one. So far as lube goes, the manual says use STP Oil Treatment but I have gotten away
with grease or soapy water. If you're going to be working on this mtr yourself I'd highly recommend you get an OEM manual. Stay away from Seloc or Clymer. Hope this helps.

I was able to get the old ones out which, for all but one was pretty easy. The final, third, one gave me some trouble, but I got it out. I will go in and make sure all is clean before I install the new ones.

Any recommendation on where to find an OEM manual for this motor? I really would like to read through one before I reassemble everything. I don't know how to torque down the head or anything.

Thanks again for all our help.
