Took the boat out yesterday. Started and ran fine here at home when getting it ready. Battery fully charged. Started and ran fine at the boat ramp. After the second stop during fishing, it would not fire up again. The battery was acting like it was drained down already. The started would turn the motor after first turning the key then it would stay stuck in the up position. We flag down a couple of people and switched batteries. Same result. After looking at the motor we realized that the teeth on the starter were rolling on the teeth of the flywheel, as opposed to fitting together like a zipper. Is there any way that the two could be out of sync or is this a product of something else happening.

corroded connection, dead cell in battery

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Battery has been load tested recently and checked out okay. Three seperate batteries would not start the boat. I think I will check it with the jumper method.

I would check all you connections and make sure your not losing power somewhere with a bad connection

I tried jumping the starter directly. It is doing the exact same thing. Starter is working but is not falling into the teeth on the flywheel. The teeth from the starter and flywheel are just rolling on top of each other. Is there a way to adjust this.

Make sure all of the starter bolt are tight. There is no adjustment. Is the starter gear chewed up? Also, if the negative connection/cable to the engine block is corroded, then jumping won't help (if the negative battery terminal was not jumped to the block somehow).

I jumped it from jumper cables, not using existing wiring. I have found that the starter bracket has a broken mount.
