I bought a 30 hp Johnson about a month ago. It ran when I bought it. It sat for about a month after I got it home while I rebuilt the transom. It won't start now. It cranks, but won't turn over. I haven't found any shops willing to work on it. I'm willing to do work myself if I have to. I messaged the guy I bought it from and he said it fired right up every time for him. So I'm hoping it's just something minor, but maybe something broke or shook loose on the transport home. Any advice would be great. I don't even know where to start.

People on here will want a model number. Is it a tiller motor? Could be as simple as the clip on the man overboard switch.

Are you pushing the key in while cranking it over ?----Operating the manual primer correctly for cold starting.

It's a tiller motor.
Is that the same as the kill switch?
Yes, the kill switch serves two purposes. One, if you push it in it turns off the motor but it also has a little clip in it with a little string that you clip to your body. If it pulls out of there it also kills the motor. If you lost that clip when you transported it it will not start. Do you see a little clip on the end of your handle?

Should be something like these.
I don't have anything like that. The kill switch doesn't feel like it is engaging anything when I push it, either. There is no little click on type feeling

Okay, my goof. My 1987 30 horse Johnson has the clip and that must have been the first year. I know what you're talking about about how the switch doesn't feel like it's going in but it is. Just a little bit.

So what's your knowledge of this motor? Like racer says, you have a primer and not a choke. Do you know how to use it? Also, do you have the mechanical ability of testing for spark?

I don't have a primer bulb on the motor itself. I have no knowledge of this particular motor except that it started for the old owner and hasn't started for me. I know these guys are tricky with their starting procedure though. I messed around with the choke and throttle, and that's about it.

I used to have an old motorcycle and worked on it myself, but I lost interest and don't feel like I've retained much of that information. My neighbor is knowledgeable on car engines so I could borrow a tester and tools and maybe get some minor help from him.

Okay, I'm pretty sure it'll run okay you just don't know how to start it. So next to the start button is a knob and you think it's a choke but it is not. It's a fuel primer.

So follow these steps, and let's see if it'll run. First of all I'm assuming you've got it hooked up to water or you've got it in a barrel, correct?

On the fuel line, is a ball and that is also called the primer ball. Squeeze it a bunch of times until it gets stiff. On the tiller arm twist the grip until it says start, that's assuming it hasn't wore off. Now pull out the knob that you think is a choke twice. After you pull it it should snap back in or at least halfway. Now push the start button. When you pull the knob you should feel resistance like a plunger. What it's doing is spraying gasoline into the intake and carburetor making it easier to start.

If that doesn't work I would grab your neighbor and show him the instructions and see if he can get it to go. Report back

You're right, I was treating it like a choke. So I ran out there and tried what you described and I still couldn't get it to go. My neighbor is in for the night.

I didn't feel much resistance when I pulled out the plunger so I tried a few more pumps. It slowly went in, no snapping action. I attached a picture to make sure we're talking about the same thing lol

You might have flooded it.

Did you have the throttle in the start position?

I believe once you figure it out it will be a piece of cake.

Here is the procedure again, just more detailed.

I tried the throttle in each far position and a center position it kind of popped into.

No dice. I'll try with my neighbor tomorrow

Another thing that a newbie might do is plug the tank fuel line in the wrong way assuming you have quick disconnects on both sides of the fuel line.

On the fuel squeeze ball there is an arrow showing which way the fuel goes . Make sure that it is pointing towards the end that is connected to the engine.

Long shot but you never know.
