I know there are a lot of posts on this, and I have searched many but there is some terminology I do not know so it is confusing.
Ok, so I am trying to replace the impellor and we removed the 4 bolts, as well as the one under the small fin above the prop. The Lower Unit comes down about 1 inch then stops and appears to be connected to the shift rod. How do I release the shift rod and what do I need to know to get it re-connected when I am finished? It looks like the top of it is connected at a place that would be really tough to get to. I am a novice, but wanting to learn.

An OEM shop manual would be helpful right now ...

You might look a the parks list on BRP Evinrude website to see how the upper end of the shift rod is attached. It must be released from below the bottom carb before you can drop the LU.

I would suggest putting a couple of the LU bolts back in place loosely so the LU doesn't fall when you get the shift rod undone. I use 1/4" drive long extension with a socket and a U joint to remove the pivot pin from the upper end of the shift rod. It's a little hard to get at but not impossible with the right tools.

the manual would be ideal, because how the attachment is undone under the carb can vary. mine has a hitch pin you pull out, then you just push the shaft it went through to the port side as far as possible and it takes the connection off the shift rod!!!!

no unscrewing any bolts!!!

important note!! once the lower unit is off. MAKE SURE THE SHIFT ROD DOES NOT ROTATE!!!!!! it is only slightly threaded in postion and that is how the shifter is adjusted....since it was already shifting good..it is in the correct spot when you take the LU off!

good luck

I saw a pin so I think I understand where you are going with this. I think our biggest fear is getting it all put back together. Feeding that rod back through all that makes me nervous, then getting it rehooked.
Now I have seen people say put it in forward or reverse? Should it be in gear? (F or R) or in neutral?

Thanks

thats were the book comes in...it might be different , based on what year and hp motor you have.

On my 95 115 the manual said to put the shift in reverse to release the catch on the shift rod....basically because that action raises the rod and attachment for easier viewing...

JUST DONT TURN THE SHIFT ROD after it is disconnected....

you could hit a home run if someone posted who had the same motor and did this job before!! and helped you out....

good luck

Put it into whichever gear affords you the most space and best vantage point for reattaching the shift rod to the pivot during reassembly. As long as you dont spin the shift rod when the lower unit is off, everything should line back up when you reassemble. I use one of those extendable magnets that look like a radio antenna to manouver the rod into place so that I can get the pin to line up with the hole on the shift rod. May sound confusing but after youve done it once, its a piece of cake.

Ok, so we got everything apart and the impeller was NOT in too bad of shape. We of course installed the whole new kit since we had it apart but my question now is, if we start the motor and we still get no water, what do we look for next?

Back flush the system while it is apart.

I have a 85 HP that I just changed the impeller. The pin that works the shifting rod is actually connected to the pivot arm that is connected to the shifting cable. you have to take the pivot bolt out and slip the pin out of the shifting rod. As for as the reassembly, I've changed several and the shifting rod actually goes back up into position pretty easy.

Maybe you didn't notice, but this thread is almost one year old.

Re: 1986 90hp Johnson v4 shift rod help

I am new to this and am working on a 1986 Johnson as seen in this diagram:

http://www.**********/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/1986/J60TLCDS/GEARCASE - 20" MODELS/parts.html#

There are two issues I'm not sure of:

1. The impeller key as shown in this thread has the slope, ie, incline increasing as the shaft rotates clockwise.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309188

It seems counter intuitive to me and I would have expected the slope to be the other way.

Second, on my shift rod, is there a specific height that it should be? And how is that measured?

(When I took it apart I did not notice the comments about not turning it!)

Thanks!
