Re: 1986 Century 6 Meter Restoration

Made some great progress but ran into a huge problem! When I bonded in my transom I did not have my drain hole drilled out. The next day it rained for 24 hours. The following day I checked on the boat and found a nice suprize of 3" of water. My cover blew in ! DOH

I was able to get it drained and dry. If anyone is reading this be sure you drill your drain hole. Had I left it any longer I would have had an 18ft bath tub!

Is 2 lb density foam common to fill in bulkheads etc? As I read I am not sure if I may be in the 2lb range or maybe 4.

Re: 1986 Century 6 Meter Restoration

Thanks !

Fall is closing in ! Looks like I will have to find an alternative place to work. Unfortunately I cant get my boat into my shop in my back yard. When I get back from hunting I am going to look at the option of extending my single car garage with a plywood enclosure so I can finish my glassing. At least I can keep the boat dry and use heat lamps where required. Right now the boat is at my inlaws farm and the ground is soaking wet. Its been raining non stop. The wet ground has been a pain in the $#%% ! Each time I clim into the boat I have to change from my boots to my shoes. I hate rain!

Heading up to Northern Ontario next week to hunt moose! Cant wait !

Re: 1986 Century 6 Meter Restoration

I have taken a break from the boat for the last 3 weeks. I had some prep work to do to get ready for moose hunting. We had a great hunt last week. I nailed this nice Bull opening morning. We hunt moose in Ear Falls Ontario. For us its a 24 hour drive to get there. We camp well off the beaten path and hunt hardcore.

It getting cool here now and there's just no way I am going to get the fiberglass done before it gets too cold. I have decided to knock out the wall in my garage so I can get the boat into my work shop. I have an 18 X 29 shop in my back yard but no way to get to it. By installing a garage door on the back side of my garage will allow me to pull through and get the boat into my shop.

With winter closing in I just won't get the boat done in time. I have decided to add a second garage door in my attached garage so I can get my boat into my work shop that is in my back yard. Once I get the new door in I can back the boat through my garage and get it into the shop. I have heat and all the comforts of home. looking forward to getting back into it! Here is the before picture of my garage.

Re: 1986 Century 6 Meter Restoration

Another weekend and I am done the garage demolation. With the wall removed I can now get the boat into my work shop. I spent the weekend organizing so I can get my shop cleaned up. It worked out well as our local TSC store had bins on sale. My garage door should be in this week. I am going to spend next week cleaning the shop to make room for the SS Minnow.

Cant wait to get started !

Re: 1986 Century 6 Meter Restoration

Now thats its 40F I finally got the boat inside. The new door addition gave me just enough room to get the boat into the work shop. I made a little dolly and the boat is ready for the next tabbing layer.

I only heat my shop when I plan to be out there. What is the best way to store fiberglass when it is below freezing? I was thinking of building a small enclosure and keeping the resin etc from freezing.

I would bring it in the house but the open containers stink too much.

Happy New Year ! Guys

Time to get back to the boat and get it done!

Underneath the motor were (5) 7" X 7" 1" thick blocks of wood that were fiberglassed to the hull. What is their purpose!

Made soem good progress this weekend, I have 2 layers of CSM and one layer of 1708 on the stringers. I plan to add one more layer of 1708 and then it will be time to move on to the floor.

This was the only good news, it ran! This was the deciding factor weather to call it quits or proceed!

Re: 1986 Century 6 Meter Restoration

Hi Guy's

I did not fall off the face of the earth. I am sorry that I haven't posted lately. My job has me traveling so when I am home and could get the time to work on the boat I made every second count. It was one year ago today I trailered her home. I am happy to say that 51 weeks later I finished it.

I now have great respect for anyone who has restored a boat. I would have never thought it would have been so challenging but at the same time I knew it would be rewarding.

There were many of nights I thought about putting it on hold and taking an extra year. My 2 girls and my wife were behind me 100% and would often pitch in when they could and bring me out dinner. The last 3 months have been hardcore work sessions in the garage often working until 1-2am.
