My champion bass boat has been sitting around since last year. I did drain the gas out of the carbs before storage. Went to the lake over Memorial weekend and motor would start ok, but when putting a load on, it will bogg down and die. Motor will re-start ok and rev up ok; but when i put it in drive and try to accelerate hard it would die. I also watched the water pressure gauge and during hard acceleration in neutral water pressure would reach up to 12 and fall down to 3, and motor would idle ok. However, when I tried to go forward I could only get the water pressure to get to 3.75. I had to get back to the boat ramp going very slowly up stream where when I tried to give it more gas the motor would bogg down. Still had a great weekend with wife and family. Can you help me with this fix? :(

Hey Scootter,<br />I don't guess you squeezed the priming bulb when the engine was trying ta die did ya? Good place to start looking for problem. If bulb is soft, probably a fuel pump or leaky fuel line. Also examine plugs. They'll tell ya what's wrong. When ya pull 'um, note which one came from where and get back to us.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

I definitely have had to keep priming the bulb to keep the engine running. Also, the fuel did not completely fill up in the new fuel filter unless I kept priming the bulb. How can i tell if the fuel pump is bad? Does the fuel pump run on vacuum? Also, does the VRO separate from the fuel pump? The spark plugs all look the same: oil black. Can someone help me with these questions?

ok, I pulled the fuel pump and answered my own question, it is not vacuum operated. I am taking the fuel pump and oil feed to the dealer tomorrow. Does the whole unit need to be replaced or should I get a kit and install it first? What do y'all recommend? ;)

Hey, Scooter.<br /><br />Did you take Hooty's advice? Please try a little patience. There are at least twenty threads running right now with the same symptoms you have. How many did you read?<br /><br />When we are trying to deal with so many problems of the same kind at the same time it is annoying to have someone whine that they aren't getting enough attention.<br /><br />You have a fuel starvation problem. Since you have pulled the fuel pump you might as well replace it with a non-VRO pump.<br /><br />Then check your fuel tank, pickup, anti-siphon valve, primer bulb, fuel lines and filter for restrictions and air leaks. Be sure that you tank is adequately vented.<br /><br />When you get it all back together and fueled with premix if you still have the same problem, try squirting some fuel mix into each carb. If that causes it to pick up to normal, overhaul that carb.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

scooter,<br /><br />JB is right. Since you have the whole thing out. why waste your money? get rid of the VRO. and just mix you oil into your gas. That way you know for sure that you have oil in your engine.<br /><br />I dont know how old you engine is but I would have a better feeling if I pre mixed my own oil into the gas. its a little trouble. but atleast it wont blow up an engine if the vro system quits on you.<br /><br />remember, the more stuff you have, the more things can mess up. keep it simple and worry about the fun in the sun not if your VRO is mixing oil into your gas.<br /><br />something to think about.

What is a anti-siphon valve? where is it normally located? and what does it look like? By the way, the dealer wasn't very helpful, he wants me to bring in the boat. Where can I get a non VRO fuel pump for my 1985 Evinrude XP150???<br />Thanks for all of y'alls help!!!!!! Scootter

Do a compression test, and spark test, before you spring for a new VRO pump. Is this the orgnial pump, and does it have a small white tag that has VRO2 on the tag?

The VRO pump has a white tag that says: "438089, 28-E-V MEXICO. It was installed in 1996 but I do not know what model it is.... The dealer did say that it might not be the VRO pump but it might be the power pack? Could this be so? What does the power pack look like and located? Also, does the engine have to be running in order for the VRO pump to come on? With the key on only motor not running the VRO does not operate. <br />Your help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br />Scootter

Hello Admiral Clanton, Did the spark test and saw that I did not have spark to 2,4,6 cyl. Replaced power pack on port side and engine is running perfect. Going boating this weekend and thanks for everone's help. This is a great site, I like reading and learning from everyone. Keep up the good work. Scootter
