1986 Evinrude 50 hp outboards any good?

I'm looking at a boat with a 1986 Evinrude 50 on it that looks good and seller says it is one of the best motors 'Rude ever made. He wants $600 for motor or will sell without. Anyone have an opinion ot that motor? I know he has taken good care of it as he does with all his stuff. Bought a 1999 Johnson 9.9 from him a couple of years ago and you couldn't tell it from brand new.

i think that that is reasonable if u have had a good purchase from him before. Just be sure to check over everything. Sound reasonable to me

The motor will be as good as it has been looked after. Do all the checks before you commit to it.

good motor, if well maintained, easy to work on.

Ya, they are pretty bullit proof, I have an '81 50 with the original power head and it still has 140psi compression.

Parts are plentiful and as TD said they are pretty easy to work on, not that you have to much.

Like everyone says before, if you trust the guy, you should be OK. I would ask for a compression test and a test run if I were you. I have always been a fan of ALL of the OMC products of old.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.
